Abaan Ahmed, the 21-year-old youngest son of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, died in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi on Thursday morning after the SUV he was travelling in crashed into a road divider. Another occupant, identified as Sonu, also lost his life, while three others sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital for treatment.
According to the police, the group was travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi to meet Abaan’s elder brother, Ali Ahmed, who is currently lodged in the Jhansi district jail. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) B.B.G.T.S. Murthy said preliminary findings suggest the vehicle was moving at high speed before it struck the divider. Police have registered the case and launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
Police Investigate
The accident took place within the jurisdiction of Poonch police station on the Jhansi-Kanpur highway during the early hours of Thursday. According to officials, the SUV suffered extensive damage after colliding with the concrete divider, leaving the front portion of the vehicle badly mangled. Local residents and emergency responders rushed to the scene and helped rescue those trapped inside before they were taken to a nearby hospital.
However, he added that the exact cause of the accident is yet to be established and all possibilities are being examined. Police are collecting forensic evidence from the site, inspecting the damaged vehicle and recording statements from the injured passengers to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Media reports have suggested that the driver may have attempted to avoid an obstacle on the road before losing control, although officials have not confirmed this version. Authorities have emphasised that the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation until the inquiry is completed. The injured passengers continue to receive medical treatment, and their condition is reported to be stable.

Abaan Ahmed belonged to a family that has remained at the centre of public attention for several years due to multiple high-profile criminal cases and violent incidents. His father, Atiq Ahmed, was a former Member of Parliament who faced numerous criminal charges over several decades.
In April 2023, Abaan’s elder brother, Asad Ahmed, was killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force in Jhansi while he was wanted in connection with the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal. Just days later, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three assailants while they were being escorted by police for a medical examination in Prayagraj. The killings, which were captured on live television, sparked widespread debate over law and order and criminal justice in the country.
Unlike some other members of his family, Abaan had largely remained away from public attention. According to police, he was travelling to Jhansi to meet his brother Ali Ahmed, who remains in judicial custody, when the accident occurred. While the family’s history has once again drawn attention to the incident, officials have maintained that the present case is being treated strictly as a road accident, with the investigation focused on determining how the crash occurred rather than on any unrelated circumstances.
