An FIR has been registered against BJP MLA from Unnao under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) act. Uttar Pradesh Kuldeep Singh Sengar who has been accused of raping a teenage girl along with his brother, Atul Singh Sengar. After drawing flak for their lackadaisical attitude in handling the case, the UP government decided to file FIRs against Kuldeep and others. He has also been booked under 363, 366 and 373 of the Indian Penal Code.
After the initial Special Investigation Team submitted its report on Wednesday evening, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The SIT also submitted a video that purportedly shows the girl’s father saying he was assaulted by Sengar’s brother Atul in the presence of police, reported The Indian Express.
Background
On April 8, the girl, along with her family, had attempted suicide outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Lucknow residence.
The girl on Sunday had attempted self-immolation by pouring kerosene on herself, citing inaction of the police even after filing a complaint against BJP MLA from Unnao, Kuldeep Singh Sengar.
The father of the woman died in police custody. Dr. Atul, District Hospital, Unnao, told ANI, “The man was admitted to the hospital last night after he complained of abdominal pain and vomiting. He passed away in the early morning hours. He was admitted to the hospital by the police.”
However, the relatives of the woman alleged that the accused Kuldeep Singh Sengar murdered him in jail.
The woman alleged that when the police finally registered the FIR after stalling it for a year, she and her family were threatened. The family also alleges that the woman’s father was thrashed by the MLA’s brother on April 3, after he refused to cancel the FIR. Subsequently, the police went ahead to book the father and locked him up.
Kuldeep’s brother, Atul, was arrested along with three others in connection with the crime on April 10.

The girl was allegedly raped by the BJP MLA and his brother a year back. The police stalled for a year before registering a complaint. The father of the victim was beaten up by the MLA’s brother for refusing to withdraw the FIR. Then the father was arrested and he died in police custody. The girl went through such an ordeal for a year to get justice. A government that prides itself on their Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative, handled the girl’s plea without sensitivity. But finally, public outrage and consistent reportage by media helped to register the case against the MLA. We hope the justice is done in this case.
