Another Journalist Shot Dead In Tripura By TSR Constable

Another journalist was killed in Tripura today, making it the second such incident in two months. Sudipta Dutta Bhaumik, a journalist with Syandan Patrika, one of Agartala’s leading newspaper, was shot dead by Nandagopal Reang, a TSR constable.

In a report by The Indian Express, the editor of Syandan Patrika said that Sudipta went to meet the Commandant of the 2nd TSR at RK Nagar. He did have an appointment with him, yet the TSA constable tried to block his way which led to an altercation.

Nandagopal Reang shot at him and Sudipta died on the spot. His body was brought back to Agartala. The TSR constable has been arrested.

On September 20, another journalist Shantanu Bhowmik was killed by a mob on the outskirts of Agartala. He was covering a clash between CPI(M) and IPFT supporters.

The Logical Indian Take: Increasing violence against journalists

93 journalists and media professionals were killed in 2016, according to a report by the International Federation of Journalists. With five journalists being killed, India ranks eighth in the list of a number of media professionals killed in the past year.

Gauri Lankesh, editor of Lankesh Patrike was shot dead by unidentified assailants on September 5, 2017. India degraded by three ranks from 133 to 136 in the 2017 World Press Freedom Index. With this increasing violence is there no place for journalists in India anymore?
