UP Govt Makes Aadhaar Mandatory For Differently-Abled To Avail Free Rides

Differently-abled people will now have to mandatorily carry their Aadhaar on themselves to avail free bus rides that they are entitled to with Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) buses.

This is going to be implemented from 1 January 2018. UPSRTC managing director P Guruprasad recently made it mandatory to carry both the disability certificate along with Aadhaar to curb anyone misusing the privilege extended to the differently-abled community and said, ”This step has been taken to curb people from producing fake disability certificates to avail free rides on the buses.

According to a Times of India report, UPSRTC chief general manager HS Gaba said that many complaints have been lodged at the department where people have shown fake disability certificates. As disability certificate can be borrowed from somebody else, so that is not a foolproof evidence of disability. As Aadhaar will have all other information that should be made mandatory.

Gaba added, “Now, the Aadhaar card of a disabled passenger will be linked to their disability certificates. The Aadhaar card contains authentic information of a person and in case there is fraud, he will get caught. Once Aadhaar cards are made mandatory, a person will think twice before committing fraud.”

Rajeev Chauhan, UPSRTC regional manager, Bareilly division said that only people with more than 40% disability is allowed to avail the privilege, and many people do not pay attention to it.
