Ahmedabad Plants 3.61 Lakh Saplings In 60 Minutes, Sets Global Green Record

Ahmedabad’s plantation drive created a Guinness World Record with 3.61 lakh saplings, but their survival will define the real environmental impact.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) achieved a Guinness World Record on July 12, 2026, after planting 3.61 lakh saplings within one hour at Bhadaj, Ahmedabad. The plantation drive brought together more than 25,000 volunteers, including civic workers, students, NGOs, social organisations and local residents, who participated in a large-scale effort to increase green cover using the Miyawaki method.

The initiative was part of a broader plantation campaign across the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency, where over 1.25 crore saplings were planted. While officials and public representatives hailed the achievement as a landmark environmental milestone, the larger question remains about ensuring the survival and growth of these saplings through long-term maintenance and ecological planning.

Ahmedabad’s Record-Breaking Plantation Drive Brings Thousands Together

Ahmedabad witnessed a massive environmental mobilisation as thousands of volunteers gathered at Bhadaj to participate in a plantation drive that set a new global benchmark. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation organised the event with the aim of creating awareness around urban greenery and encouraging public participation in environmental conservation.

Within just 60 minutes, volunteers planted 3.61 lakh saplings, earning recognition from Guinness World Records. The plantation covered around 76,000 square metres and involved people from different sections of society, including municipal employees, students, non-governmental organisations and citizens.

The drive was carried out using the Miyawaki method, a technique that focuses on developing dense forests by planting native species close together. The approach is increasingly used in urban areas where space is limited and cities are looking for ways to improve biodiversity and green cover.

The achievement highlighted the power of collective participation, with thousands of individuals contributing to a shared environmental goal.

A Larger Campaign To Expand Green Cover Across Gujarat

The Bhadaj plantation was not an isolated event but part of a wider environmental campaign undertaken across the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency. As part of this initiative, more than 1.25 crore saplings were planted with the participation of citizens, institutions, social organisations and government bodies.

The campaign reflects growing efforts by cities and communities to address concerns around climate change, rising temperatures and declining green spaces. Rapid urban expansion has increased pressure on natural ecosystems, making urban forests and sustainable landscaping important components of city planning.

The use of indigenous plant species during the plantation drive was aimed at creating a more suitable ecosystem adapted to local conditions. Native species generally have better chances of survival as they are naturally suited to the region’s climate and soil conditions.

Officials and organisers described the record as a symbol of public participation in environmental protection. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated AMC, volunteers and residents involved in the plantation effort, appreciating their contribution towards creating a greener environment.

The Real Test Begins After The Record Is Created

While the plantation milestone has drawn widespread appreciation, environmental experts often point out that planting saplings is only the beginning of ecological restoration. The long-term success of such initiatives depends on consistent care, protection and monitoring.

Young saplings require regular watering, maintenance and protection from damage, especially during their early years of growth. Without proper follow-up systems, a large number of planted saplings may struggle to survive.

Urban planners and environmentalists have frequently emphasised that green initiatives should focus not only on the number of trees planted but also on the creation of sustainable ecosystems. A successful urban forest requires long-term planning, community involvement and scientific monitoring.

Ahmedabad’s achievement therefore represents both a celebration and a responsibility, a reminder that environmental action must continue even after the record certificates are awarded and public attention moves elsewhere.

A Green Milestone With A Larger Message For Cities

The plantation drive reflects how collective action can bring communities together around environmental concerns. From students and volunteers to civic workers and organisations, thousands contributed towards a common purpose.

For rapidly growing cities, increasing green spaces has become essential for improving air quality, supporting biodiversity and creating healthier living environments. Urban forests can also help communities reconnect with nature and build resilience against environmental challenges.

However, the impact of such initiatives will ultimately be measured over years, not hours. The transformation from a planted sapling into a mature tree requires patience, commitment and continuous care.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Ahmedabad’s Guinness World Record plantation drive is a powerful example of what people can achieve when communities unite for a shared environmental cause. Such efforts can inspire greater awareness and encourage citizens to participate in building greener cities.

At the same time, environmental responsibility cannot end with a record-breaking event. The true achievement will lie in ensuring that these saplings survive, grow and become a lasting part of Ahmedabad’s ecological landscape. Sustainable development requires both collective action and long-term commitment.

As cities across India look for solutions to climate challenges, can plantation drives like Ahmedabad’s become the beginning of sustained environmental movements rather than one-day milestones?
