Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat stated clearly that the explosion at Nowgam police station near Srinagar was “accidental,” urging that “any other speculation into the cause of this incident is unnecessary.”
The blast on Friday night resulted in nine deaths, mostly policemen and forensic experts, and injured 32 others. The explosives had been recently seized from a terror module in Faridabad, Haryana, linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed.
This tragic event occurs days after a similar deadly car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, linked to the same terror network, which killed 13 people and injured over 20 others.

Nowgam Blast ‘Accidental’
J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat detailed that the tragic explosion at Nowgam police station claimed the lives of a State Investigation Agency official, three Forensic Science Laboratory staff, two crime wing officers, two revenue officials, and a tailor assisting the team. In addition, 27 police personnel, two revenue officials, and three civilians sustained injuries.
Speaking to reporters, he emphasized that due to the highly unstable and sensitive nature of the seized explosives, the recovery operation was conducted with extreme caution. “An accidental explosion occurred around 11:20 PM on Friday; any speculation about other causes is unnecessary,” he stated.

Blast at Nowgam, J&K
Police and forensic teams were inspecting large quantities of ammonium nitrate and other explosives seized from a Faridabad-based terror module involving radicalised doctors. The Nowgam police station was central to investigations following the arrest of doctors who had put up terror posters threatening security forces.
The explosion severely damaged the police station and nearby areas, scattering debris hundreds of metres away. Rescue operations were swift but the loss of life is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by officials handling explosive materials connected to terrorism.
Human Toll and Official Statements
Among the nine killed were several law enforcement officers and forensic personnel examining the explosives. Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat categorically ruled out any terror angle in the blast and requested restraint from speculation.
The incident has caused heightened security alerts and an ongoing investigation into how the detonation occurred, including potential procedural lapses. The blast adds to heightened tension following the earlier Red Fort attack, increasing demands for vigilance in counter-terrorism operations.
