Tenzin Yangki, daughter of a former IAS officer, has become the first female IPS officer from Arunachal Pradesh. She secured an All India Rank of 545 in the 2022 UPSC Civil Services Examination and recently completed her Phase-I training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.

Her success breaks important gender and regional barriers in Indian policing, and has received praise from leaders including industrialist Anand Mahindra and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

Breaking Barriers in Arunachal Pradesh

Hailing from Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, Yangki grew up in a family dedicated to public service; her late father Thupten Tempa was a former IAS officer and minister while her mother is a retired government secretary.

She had earlier cleared the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission exam in 2017 before succeeding in the UPSC Civil Services Exam. Her journey to IPS officer marks a significant milestone for women and the Northeast region in India’s civil services.

Achievements and Official Praise

Yangki’s academic background includes a BSc in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Warwick and postgraduation in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Industrialist Anand Mahindra shared her story on social media, calling her an academician, civil servant, and now IPS officer, applauding her courage in paving a new path for others to follow. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also congratulated Yangki, calling her a shining example of ‘Nari Shakti’ and a source of inspiration for young women.
