BSF jawan Rambabu Singh, a 26-year-old resident of Vasilpur village in Bihar’s Siwan district, succumbed to injuries sustained during heavy Pakistani shelling along the Jammu and Kashmir border on May 9. Singh, who was married just three months ago, passed away on Monday, May 12, at a military hospital in Jammu.
His mortal remains are expected to reach his native village, Badharia, on Tuesday, where he will be laid to rest with full state honours. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced an ex-gratia of ₹50 lakh for Singh’s family, while senior officials and the local community have expressed deep condolences, recognising Singh’s sacrifice amid ongoing border tensions.
A Village United in Grief and Pride
The news of Rambabu Singh’s death has cast a deep shadow over his home village of Vasilpur and the adjoining Badharia area. Singh’s wife, Anjali Devi, whom he married in February, is inconsolable yet proud of her husband’s commitment to the nation. “He always wanted to serve on the frontlines. He died fulfilling his dream,” said his father, Ramvichar Singh, a former Deputy Mukhiya of the village.
The entire community is preparing for his final journey, with villagers, friends, and local leaders expected to gather in large numbers to pay their respects. The Siwan district administration has confirmed that Singh will be accorded full police honours during his last rites.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, in his condolence message, stated, “The nation will always remember Rambabu Singh’s supreme sacrifice. The government stands with his family in this hour of grief.”

Rambabu Singh’s death is the latest in a series of casualties resulting from increased hostilities along the India-Pakistan border, particularly in the wake of Operation Sindoor-a response to recent terror attacks in the region. Singh was among several BSF personnel injured during the heavy shelling in the RS Pura sector.
Despite being eligible for a transfer to a less volatile posting in Rajasthan, Singh chose to remain on the Jammu border, citing his sense of duty. Senior BSF officials have saluted his bravery, with a spokesperson stating, “Rambabu Singh’s dedication and courage exemplify the spirit of the Border Security Force.
We will ensure that his family receives all possible support.” The state government’s prompt announcement of financial assistance and public tributes underscores the collective respect for those who serve and sacrifice at the nation’s borders.
