A four-storey building collapsed in Burari, Delhi, near Oscar Public School, around 6:30 PM on January 27, 2025. The incident has resulted in the tragic loss of two lives, identified as a 7-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl. So far, 12 individuals have been rescued, with an estimated 22 still feared trapped under the debris.

Emergency services, including the Delhi Fire Department, NDRF, DDMA, and police, are engaged in ongoing rescue operations. Political figures like BJP MP Manoj Tiwari have raised concerns about potential negligence in construction safety, prompting investigations into the incident.

Rescue Operations Underway

The collapse occurred in Kaushik Enclave, leading to immediate chaos among residents. Eyewitnesses reported a loud noise before the structure fell. As of now, 12 individuals have been successfully rescued from the wreckage and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi expressed her condolences and assured that all necessary assistance will be provided to those affected. She stated on social media, “This incident of building collapse in Burari is extremely sad,” emphasizing the urgency of rescue operations and the need for thorough investigations.

Concerns Over Construction Safety

This tragic event has reignited discussions regarding construction safety standards in Delhi. Manoj Tiwari highlighted that the building had recently completed construction and was undergoing finishing work when it collapsed. He asserted that there is “no doubt” about negligence being a factor and called for accountability from those responsible for ensuring building safety.

Tiwari noted that police reports estimate around 20-22 people could still be trapped under the rubble. The rescue operation is challenging due to the massive load of debris, with officials meticulously removing it by hand to ensure safety during rescues.

Background on Urban Development Issues

Delhi has faced numerous challenges related to urban development and construction safety in recent years. Rapid urbanisation has often outpaced regulatory enforcement, leading to concerns over inadequate building practices and safety violations. Previous incidents of building collapses in various parts of the city have raised alarms about structural integrity and compliance with safety codes. The Burari incident serves as a critical reminder of these ongoing issues, prompting calls for stricter oversight and enhanced regulatory frameworks to protect residents from such tragedies.

As we reflect on this incident, it is crucial to advocate for accountability and transparency in urban development practices to prevent such disasters in the future.
