Kerala police arrested a 61-year-old Madrasa teacher, Yusuf, from Kottayam district, for alleged sexual harassment of several minors over a period of 2 years.

Yusuf was a native of Aluva district and was employed as a Madrasa teacher in a mosque in Thalayolaparambu, Kottayam district. He was arrested by Thalayolaparambu police following an initial complaint filed by the Mahallu committee, the executive body of the Mosque.

A Repeat Offender

“The Chief Imam of the mosque would not visit the Madrasa for three days a week. During these three days, Yusuf would pick his victims, take them to a private room and sexually abuse them,” The New Indian Express quoted Soofi TM, Sub Inspector of Thalayolaparambu police station, as saying.

Yusuf chose victims who were less than 10 years old, in order to ensure that the crime goes unreported since such young kids would hardly be able to comprehend the crime.

Yusuf was a repeat offender and had been continuously harassing minors in the Madrasa for last two years, the police said. He sexually abused more than a dozen kids.

Yusuf evaded earlier arrest as parents of the victims failed to lodge a complaint against him.

“Even in this case, the parents of the two kids and the Mahallu committee took a while to register their complaint,” Soofi TM said.

After arrest, Yusuf confessed that he has been raping minors since the age of 25 and that he has been a victim of sexual assault as a child himself.
