Madhya Pradesh: Brothers & Uncle Rape & Behead 12-Yr-Old Girl

Family members of a 12-year-old Dalit girl in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district have been charged with her rape and murder. Aunt, uncle and three brothers of the girl have been charged with the crime, and one of the brothers is absconding. According to police, one of the accused is a minor.

On March 13, the class VI student was reported missing, and the next day her severed head and body were found in a field outside Berkhedi village. Initially, police had declared a reward of Rs 10,000 for information regarding the case and later increased it to Rs 25,000.

The incident

The victim’s aunt, who was aware of the police, initially misled them by accusing a neighbour of the crime, saying that he killed her due to an old feud. However, he turned out to be innocent. Police also got a tip-off that the girl’s elder brother, 20, might be involved in the crime.

The 19-year-old younger brother confessed to the crime when the police questioned him.

Amit Sanghi, Sagar’s superintendent of police, said that when the victim threatened to complain to the police, the perpetrators strangled her and chopped off her head. After killing her, her body and severed head were thrown in an agricultural field by the men.

“While in the act, the other two brothers, including the minor, came and they both raped her. Meanwhile, the girl’s uncle, who is in his late forties, also came by. Initially, he scolded everyone and then he too raped her,” Sanghi said.

Sanghi added that allegedly, the elder brother had raped the victim on earlier occasions too. On the day of the murder, everyone except the elder brother was out for work, and taking advantage of the situation, he took her to their uncle’s house in Banda town in Sagar, and raped her.

The girl’s blood-soaked clothes and the weapon used in the crime, a sickle, were recovered by the police.

This incident is a glaring example of the fact that women and girls are not just unsafe outside, but inside their homes as well. Older brothers, uncle and aunt, who should ideally take the responsibility of protecting a much younger family member, ended up being part of this heinous crime.

The extent of brutality in this crime says a lot about the ugly mindset of those involved in it. Rape and murder have become so common that we come across such incidents on a regular basis. Shocking as the incident already is, family members being involved in the crime makes the incident even more horrific.

The Logical Indian urges authorities to punish the guilty at the earliest.
