English is a meaningless and unscientific language according to National Commission For Backward Classes chief Bhagwan Lal Sahni.
“English does not have any base. That is why each of its letters and script is unscientific. Tell me one word in it that has a scientific basis,” Sahni said while speaking at the “Importance of Hindi in Nation Building” event in New Delhi Wednesday where he also proposed Hindi as the national language.
But Sahni didn’t stop at that. He blamed makers of the Indian Constitution for not understanding the Indian heritage. “I don’t want to say, but our Constitution makers did not understand our country. Nehru even said that ‘India that is Bharat is a nation in the making. But India is an old country; it has been a country since the Vedic age,” said Sahni.
Taking a dig at people opposing Hindi imposition, he said, “There are many who say that Hindi is dangerous for the country. Some are saying that this country will break into pieces (because of Hindi). Then the question is: Will English unite the country?”
Few reporters who from the vernacular media were irked over his address and asked questions in Tamil which left Sahni in confusion. The reporters told him that Tamil as their mother tongue reported the New Indian Express.
After the National Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993 was repealed, the NCBC was given constitutional status by the Parliament last year.
This is not the first time such a bizarre statement has been made by people who took a constitutional oath. In August, while delivering a speech at IIT Bombay, HRD Minister, Ramesh Prokhriyal said, “Nasa has said that in near future if computers have to speak, then they can only do on the strength of Sanskrit, else the computer will crash because Sanskrit is the scientific language”. He further claimed that Sadhus had discovered space travel in Vedic age.
