Supreme Court Orders Gujarat Govt To Pay Bilkis Bano Rs 50 Lakh Compensation In Two Weeks

The Supreme Court on Monday, September 30 ordered the Gujarat government to pay Rs 50 Lakh compensation and provide a job to Bilkis Bano in two weeks who was gang-raped during the 2002 Godhra riots in Randhikpur village in Dahod, Gujarat.

The court on April 23 had ordered the Gujarat government to pay compensation. However, it was not given to her. The Gujarat government council had requested the bench on Monday to review the April order.

Taking note of the delay, the Supreme Court today asked the state government to speed up the process and provide the compensation within two weeks.

On March 3, 2002, Bilkis Yakub Rasool, as a 21-year-old, was attacked, gang-raped, and left to die by a mob at Randhikpur village near Ahmedabad during the riots following the Godhra train fire incident. Bilkis, who was five months pregnant, lost 14 of her family members, including four women and four children.

The Gujarat government had demanded disciplinary action against the police officials, including IPS officer RS Bhagora, convicted by the Bombay High Court for dereliction of duty in the case.

The Bombay High Court had on May 4, 2017, convicted seven people to life imprisonment – five police officers and two doctors – under sections 218 (not performing their duties) and section 201 (tampering of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
