SpiceJet Passenger Shares Image Of Cracked Window Inside Plane, Airline Issues Apology

A passenger travelling on a Mumbai-Delhi SpiceJet flight on Tuesday, November 5, spotted a cracked window pane in the plane. Hariharan Sankaran, the passenger, shared the picture of the crack on the Spicejet flight SG8152 (VT-SYG) on Twitter, after which the airline issued an apology.

The picture shows cracks in the window, with sellotape stuck on it. In the tweet, tagging the official Twitter handles of SpiceJet and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) India, the passenger raised safety concerns. “Isn’t it a major safety concern? Anyone listening?” the tweet read. SpiceJet later released a statement apologising for the same.

“Hi Hariharan, at SpiceJet, safety is our utmost concern and at no point in time does the airline compromise on the same. We shall surely convey this to the concerned head for necessary action. The inconvenience caused is regretted,” the airline said in response to the passenger’s tweet.

The passenger further questioned the airline, “If there is a cello tape pasted, it means someone has seen it and aware of the situation.”

Meanwhile, earlier today, the airline clarified that safety was not compromised. In a tweet on the same thread, SpiceJet said, “We would like to update you that the crack was on the inner flexi pane and was fixed the same day. The purpose of the inner pane is to protect the window from scratches. The inner pane doesn’t carry structural pressurization loads. Please be assured that at no point in time was safety compromised.”

If the window on a plane breaks down completely when in mid-air, the compressed air inside the plane rushes out, reducing the cabin pressure. If any passenger is sitting next to a broken window, it could suck out the passenger. Also, the pressure and temperature inside the aircraft will fall, making it very noisy inside the cabin and cause breathing problems for the passengers.
