Fact Check: Did Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind Write To Sonia Gandhi Against Supporting Shiv Sena?

Many media houses like The Print, Times Now, Republic TV and ABP News ran news based on a fake letter supposedly sent from an Islamic organisation named Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. The letter claimed that the organisation has requested Sonia Gandhi to not support Shiv Sena to form government in Maharashtra after the latest Vidhan Sabha election. The fake letter came in the backdrop of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress forming an alliance in the state to form the government but nothing is clear as of now. The Print later deleted its article.


The disputed letter is attributed to the president of this Muslim body, Arshad Madani.

“I want to draw your kind attention regarding Maharashtra’s bad politics, and it’s really unfortunate that you are considering to support Shiv Shena. It will be very dangerous and harmful step for Congress party. (sic)”, reads the letter. “It will be a very dangerous and harmful step for Congress party,” the fake letter further states.

On 18th November, the wrong reporting was done and media claimed that Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind urged congress interim president Sonia Gandhi to refrain from forming an alliance with Shiv Sena.

Soon, the fake letter also became viral on social media.

Fact Check

The fake letter that was used to report by various news organisation is fake as clarified by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on their official twitter page. The Urdu words below the picture states clearly that Maulana Arshad Madani has not written a letter to Sonia Gandhi.
