Wrap Up Of Important International And Indian News From March 22nd – April 3rd

For the past few months, Every other week, news that are not important to Indians and doesn’t affect their daily lives take over the real news. It’s almost as if we as a people have become comfortable with discussing nonsensical issues and don’t find important news worthy. The Logical Indian attempts to give you highlights of News that are important and affect us in some way or other:


Indian News
1.Kolkata Flyover Collapse: A portion of the Vivekananda Bridge near Ganesh Talkies, Kolkata collapsed at around 12:30 pm on Thursday. At least 26 people have been confirmed dead and more than 80 were injured in the incident. The bridge has been under construction for the last 5 years. While the CPIM and the TMC are blaming each other for the disaster, the police have arrested 3 officials of the Hyderabad-based construction company, IVRCL Infrastructure, under charges of murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy. The company has called the incident an “act of God”.

2.President’s Rule in Uttarakhand: The state of Uttarakhand was brought under the President’s rule on Sunday on grounds of “breakdown of governance”. The decision came at a time when the state government is facing severe political crisis caused by a rebellion in the ruling Congress party.

3.Jat Reservation in Haryana: Six castes – Jats, Jat Sikhs, Rors, Bishnois, Tyagis and Muslim Jats – were included in the list of Backward Classes in Haryana as the Assembly unanimously passed the Haryana Backward Classes Bill on Tuesday. Consequently, members from the six castes will now be eligible for reservation in government jobs and educational institutions. This came as a result of the Jat agitation in February that killed over 30 people and injured over 300.


4.Women Entry in Temples: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday ruled that women should be permitted to enter every part of a temple that men have access to. Additionally, any temple or person imposing any restrictions on women can face a jail term of up to six months under a Maharashtra law.

5.100% FDI in e-commerce: The government allowed 100 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in e-commerce marketplaces through automatic route. However, each marketplace, such as Flipkart and Amazon, must ensure that no more than 25% of the sales takes place from one single vendor registered in the marketplace.

6.Vijay Mallya summoned: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday issued a fresh summon to Vijay Mallya to appear before its investigators on April 9. This is the third and possibly last summon after Mallya failed to appear twice earlier on March 18 and April 2. If he again fails to appear on April 9 the ED could initiate legal action for revoking his passport and get a non-bailable warrant against him issued by a court.


 


International News 1.Brussels bombings, Belgium: The 22 March bombings which struck the Belgian capital – also the European Union’s de facto capital – continued to dominate international news. The continent continues to be on partial lockdown – the situation is particularly dire in France and Belgium. International travel to and from Europe has been affected even as authorities attempt to safely reopen the Brussels airport. Read more: (

2.Mosul offensive, Iraq On March 24, the Iraqi Army launched what will be a long, gruelling offensiveagainst ISIS to retake Mosul, Iraq’s third-largest city. The Iraqi forces’ last major attack against ISIS was in early 2015 when they retook Ramadi. The Mosul offensive is of crucial geopolitical importance. While progress in the past week has been slow, the Iraqi central government has said that Mosul could be back under Iraqi control by the end of 2016.


3. LGBT rights movement, the United States. In spite of the US Supreme Court’s historic legalization of gay marriage in all US States in 2015, the LGBT rights movement continues to face stiff opposition. In 2016 alone, more than 200 anti-LGBT bills have been proposed in the US. The most infamous of these legislations was a North Carolina law (passed last week) which prevents cities from enacting anti-discrimination measures. In Georgia, the governor vetoed a highly controversial “religious freedom” bill which sought to legalize LGBT discrimination. (

4. Iskandariya bombing, Iraq. A suicide bomber blew himself up in a crowded football stadium in Iskandariya, Iraq. The ISIS-affiliated terrorist killed at least 41 people, including 17 children and the Mayor. The bombing happened on 25 March and is a part of the ongoing Iraqi Civil War.


5. Palmyra offensive, Syria. On 27 March, the Syrian Army scored a major victory against ISIS when it retook the ancient city of Palmyra. As a strategically located stronghold, the retaking of Palmyra was a major blow to ISIS. Syrian soldiers are currently removing the landmines planted by ISIS across the city. (

6. Lahore suicide bombing, Pakistan. On Easter Sunday, 27 March, militants attacked Lahore’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal, killing 75 and injuring 340. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a Pakistani Taliban-affiliated terror group, claimed responsibility for the attack. The Pakistani government launched a counterterrorism operation, interrogating thousands and detaining more than 200 people.


7. Rousseff impeachment trial, Brazil. The Brazilian ruling coalition suffered a major blow when its biggest partner (the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party) abandoned the coalition on 29 March. President Dilma Rousseff is going to be facing an impeachment trial in the comingweeks over fiscal mismanagement. She is also undergoing a Supreme Court investigation over possible campaign funding irregularities which might end up annulling her 2014 election to the Presidency (she is currently serving her second term after a narrow victory in 2014). The political crisis together with the economic crisis brought forth by the worst recession in decades and the Petrobras scandal has crippled the South American nation’s economy. (

8. EgyptAir Flight 181 hijacking, Cyprus. An Egyptian man hijacked a passenger flight on 29 March. The domestic flight was flying from Alexandria to Cairo; the hijacker redirected the airplane to Cyprus. The hijacker demanded to see his estranged wife living in Cyprus and sought asylum in that country. Within seven hours, though, the passengers and crew – 63 in all – were rescued to safety, and the hijacker arrested.


9. Bangladesh reaffirms Islam as the State religion, Bangladesh. On March 30, the Bangladesh High Court rejected a 28-year-old petition calling for the removal of a constitutional provision which made Islam the country’s official religion. The decision was a major blow to the country’s embattled secular movement.


10. 2016 Nuclear Security Summit, United States. The fourth edition of the international Nuclear Security Summit was held from 31 March to 1 April in Washington, DC. 52 countries participated in the summit to adopt measures to prevent nuclear terrorism. (http://www.nss2016.org/
