In 1977, when Abdul Kareem, a native of Kottoor in Kerala’s Kasaragod district, bought 28 acres of land for 3,750 rupees, his neighbors thought he had lost his mind. Over the next four decades, through sheer physical endurance and deep ecological intuition, he transformed that barren rock into a sprawling, 32-acre dense forest known today as Kareem’s Forest Park.

Planting Life in Solid Rock
When Kareem began his afforestation effort, topsoil was virtually nonexistent. The hard laterite surface absorbed no rainwater, causing immediate runoff and scorching heat during summer months. During the monsoon rains, the forest retained millions of liters of water, allowing it to percolate deep into underground aquifers rather than washing away as surface runoff. Within a few years, water levels in surrounding village wells rose significantly.
