An Air India Express flight travelling from Dammam to Delhi was forced to divert to Ahmedabad on 31 August after a threatening note scribbled on tissue paper was discovered inside an aircraft lavatory.
Ahmedabad Police and the Crime Branch launched an immediate investigation, which has placed both an airline crew member and a flyer under the scanner following a preliminary 60 to 70 percent handwriting match with the crew member. While 32 passengers and seven other crew members were cleared, authorities have detained the suspected crew member and questioned a passenger observed visiting the washroom multiple times, as the airline pledged full cooperation and vowed strict action against any breach of aviation safety.
Panic And Forensic Scrutiny
The mid-air scare triggered standard emergency protocols when the note reading “bomb red 430” accompanied by a rough sketch of a box was found in the washroom mid-flight.
The aircraft touched down safely at Ahmedabad’s Terminal 2, where all 32 passengers and eight crew members were evacuated while anti-sabotage squads conducted exhaustive sweep operations. To trace the culprit, forensic investigators collected six handwriting samples on identical tissue paper from everyone on board. “We unequivocally condemn any conduct that compromises or has the potential to compromise the safety and security of our guests, crew and operations,” stated an Air India Express spokesperson, confirming a formal police complaint had been lodged and adding that “appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.”
Meanwhile, the personal electronic devices belonging to the questioned crew member have been sent for digital forensics.
