Indian-origin scientist Prof. Anima Anandkumar has been named among TIME’s 100 most influential people in artificial intelligence in the TIME100 AI 2026 list, recognising her work at the intersection of artificial intelligence and science. The recognition comes as Prof. Anandkumar begins a new chapter with the launch of Accelerated Understanding, a company she co-founded to use AI to accelerate scientific simulation and understanding of the physical world.

The Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), she has worked on AI applications spanning weather forecasting, nuclear fusion, medical technology, quantum computing and chip design. From Mysore To Caltech

Born in Mysore, Karnataka, Prof. Anandkumar developed an early interest in mathematics, science and technology. She completed her BTech in electrical engineering from IIT Madras in 2004 before earning a PhD in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 2009. She subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Her professional career has included work in both academia and industry. At Amazon Web Services, she became a Principal Scientist and contributed to the development and launch of Amazon SageMaker, a machine-learning service. She joined Caltech as a professor in 2017 and later served as Senior Director of AI Research at NVIDIA. She currently holds the position of Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Caltech, where she leads research into AI and its applications to scientific problems.

AI Meets Science

A major focus of Prof. Anandkumar’s research is neural operators, a class of AI methods designed to learn and simulate complex physical processes. Rather than focusing primarily on language, these systems can be used to model phenomena governed by physical laws. Her work has contributed to AI-based weather forecasting, including FourCastNet, a high-resolution weather forecasting model developed through collaboration involving NVIDIA, Caltech and other researchers.

Her research has also explored applications in areas such as nuclear fusion, medical technology, quantum systems and semiconductor manufacturing.
