A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Longchang City in Neijiang, southwest China’s Sichuan province, at 1:13 pm Beijing time on August 28, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 13 kilometres, with its epicentre at 29.23°N and 105.22°E.
The tremor was strongly felt in the epicentral area, but initial checks found no reports of casualties, collapsed buildings or people trapped. Electricity, communications and transport in the epicentre and surrounding townships were also reported to be operating normally.
In response, the China Earthquake Administration and Sichuan earthquake authorities activated Level III emergency responses, while rescue and monitoring teams were sent to assess the situation. Local officials said a deeper inspection was under way as authorities continued assessing possible damage.
Strong Tremors Prompt Checks
The CENC formally recorded the earthquake at 1:13 pm, placing the epicentre in Longchang, a city administered by Neijiang. The 13-kilometre depth meant the tremor was relatively close to the surface, contributing to noticeable shaking around the epicentral area.
Longchang authorities said some areas were experiencing heavy rainfall when the earthquake struck, adding another challenge for emergency teams carrying out inspections. According to Longchang’s municipal publicity department, officials had begun checking affected areas and had received no reports of injuries or damaged houses at the time of the initial assessment.
Xinhua later reported that the earthquake was strongly felt locally, but there were still no reports of casualties as officials continued their detailed assessment.
Rescue Teams Sent To Epicentre
Chinese authorities moved quickly to assess the impact. The China Earthquake Administration activated a Level III emergency response, while Sichuan’s earthquake authorities also initiated their own Level III response. A four-member team from the Zigong Earthquake Monitoring Centre Station was sent to the area for emergency assessment.
Sichuan’s fire and rescue authorities simultaneously deployed personnel from Neijiang and Longchang, with an advance team of 10 people and two vehicles from Neijiang and another five-person team with one vehicle from Zigong travelling towards the epicentre.
Officials said there had been no reports of earthquake-related building collapses or people trapped, while electricity, communications and transport remained normal in the epicentre and nearby townships. The response reflects the priority authorities place on quickly identifying damage and protecting residents even when initial reports suggest limited impact.
A Region Familiar With Quakes
The latest tremor comes in a province with a long history of seismic activity, including the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. However, Friday’s 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in a different part of Sichuan and should not, on its own, be interpreted as a warning of a larger earthquake.
Social-media discussions and online reports quickly amplified the incident, with users sharing official earthquake alerts and accounts of shaking in areas beyond Longchang. News reports also circulated online as authorities continued their assessment.
The earthquake was reported at a time when parts of the broader region were already facing severe weather and flood-related emergencies, including the ongoing situation near the China-Nepal border.
However, there is no evidence in the official reports reviewed that the Longchang earthquake was connected to the flooding or barrier-lake concerns in Nepal and Tibet. Keeping these events factually separate is important, particularly when social media can rapidly merge unrelated disasters into a single narrative.

Natural disasters do not discriminate, and the first responsibility of any society during such moments must be to protect people, provide timely information and prevent panic. The relatively reassuring initial reports from Longchang underline the importance of preparedness, rapid emergency assessments and transparent communication.
At the same time, the absence of reported casualties should not lead to complacency, particularly while authorities are still conducting detailed inspections. Social media can be valuable in spreading alerts and helping communities stay informed, but it also makes responsible verification essential: unrelated earthquakes, floods or other disasters should not be presented as connected without scientific evidence.
