Nepal and China have issued fresh flood warnings after the devastating August 26 floods along their Himalayan border created unstable, debris-dammed lakes that could trigger another wave of flooding. Nepalese authorities have urged residents, travellers and rescue teams to stay away from riverbanks, while China is closely monitoring a barrier lake near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers.
Chinese authorities estimate that the lake already holds around 2 million cubic metres of water, with another 3 million cubic metres potentially flowing into it over the next three days. In the latest development, the lake has begun overflowing, prompting China to halt rescue operations in the immediate area amid fears of further flooding, landslides and avalanches.
The risk comes as rescue teams continue searching for survivors of the original disaster, which has killed hundreds and left more than 1,500 people missing across Nepal and China, according to the latest AP assessment.
A New Threat After Floods
The fresh warning has emerged from the same river systems devastated by this week’s catastrophic flooding. A huge volume of rock, ice and mud entered Himalayan waterways after what scientists believe was an ice-and-rock avalanche near the Nepal-China border.
The debris temporarily blocked river channels, creating natural dams behind which water accumulated. Such formations, known as barrier or landslide-dammed lakes, can become dangerous when continued rainfall increases water pressure or erosion weakens the debris holding the water back.
Nepal’s authorities have therefore advised people to remain away from riverbanks and other exposed locations as rescue operations continue. On the Chinese side, officials have been conducting aerial surveys, hydrological assessments and flood simulations to understand how the lake could behave if its natural barrier fails.
The Kathmandu Post reported that the lake formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers, which originate in Tibet before merging and crossing into Nepal as the Bhotekoshi, a major upper tributary of the Trishuli river. Chinese authorities said a further 3 million cubic metres of water could enter the lake, with inflows expected to peak around September 1.
The scale of the threat is significant because the surrounding landscape is already heavily damaged. Roads, bridges, buildings and border infrastructure were swept away or buried during the first flood, leaving many communities difficult to reach.
The latest situation has also forced authorities to balance rescue efforts with the safety of their own teams. Media reported on August 28 that the lake on the China side had begun overflowing and that rescue operations had been stopped in the area because of the danger of another flood.
Chinese officials are racing to assess whether the water can be safely drained or diverted without destabilising the natural barrier. Meanwhile, Nepalese authorities are continuing searches downstream, where bodies have been recovered across several districts. Scientists have cautioned that the exact chain of events behind the original disaster is still being studied.
Rijan Bhakta Kayastha, a climate researcher at Kathmandu University, said an avalanche appeared to have blocked the Lhende river before the blockage gave way, while noting that a nearby earthquake may or may not have contributed to the event. ICIMOD researchers are also examining satellite imagery and working with Chinese institutions to establish the precise sequence.
Why The Risk Remains High
The latest warnings are particularly concerning because the Himalayan region remains unstable after the initial disaster. The August 26 flood sent a powerful surge through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems, devastating settlements including Timure and Syaphrubesi and destroying critical infrastructure.
The Kathmandu Post reported that the Trishuli river rose by as much as nine metres in just 30 minutes at Galchhi, while water levels at Malekhu climbed by about seven metres during the same period, highlighting the extraordinary speed of the event.
Scientists are now examining how the collapse of ice and rock may have temporarily obstructed the river before releasing a torrent downstream. The region was already known to be vulnerable: a glacial lake outburst in the Lhende river caused a sudden Bhotekoshi flood in July last year.
Researchers have also identified thousands of glacial lakes across the wider Himalayan region, with dozens considered potentially dangerous. The current emergency is therefore not simply about one overflowing lake; it reflects the complex interaction between glaciers, unstable mountain slopes, heavy rainfall, rivers and settlements located in narrow valleys.
The human cost of the original disaster continues to grow as rescue teams reach previously inaccessible areas. The Associated Press reported that at least 469 people had died in Nepal, while more than 1,500 people were missing across Nepal and China.
More than 3,200 people had also been airlifted from affected areas, while rescue workers were searching for people trapped in places including a buried hydropower-project tunnel. More than 500 foreigners were among those reported missing, including pilgrims and trekkers caught in the border region. The continuing uncertainty has left families waiting for information while authorities confront damaged roads, communications failures and increasingly hazardous terrain.
With additional rainfall capable of increasing water levels and weakening debris barriers, officials are urging people not to take unnecessary risks near rivers. The immediate priority remains clear: protect lives, keep vulnerable communities away from potential flood paths, and give rescue teams the safest possible conditions to continue their work.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The unfolding crisis along the Nepal-China border is a reminder that disasters do not recognise political boundaries. A river that begins in one country can threaten lives in another, while a landslide or glacier collapse in a remote mountain valley can quickly become a humanitarian emergency hundreds of kilometres downstream. At a time when Nepal and China are dealing with the consequences of an unprecedented disaster, cooperation, transparent information-sharing and coordinated early-warning systems are more important than ever.
The focus must remain on saving lives rather than assigning blame, while affected communities need sustained humanitarian support long after the floodwaters recede. There is also a larger lesson for governments across the Himalayan region: disaster preparedness cannot stop at national borders when rivers, glaciers and mountain ecosystems are interconnected.
