Gas Spreads Into Homes

The leak occurred at the Godhani water treatment plant near Collector’s Colony during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. According to officials and local reports, chlorine began escaping from a 900-kg-capacity cylinder at around 1 am, with the gas spreading beyond the plant towards nearby residential settlements.

Residents in the surrounding areas reported a strong chlorine smell and began experiencing coughing and breathing difficulties. The incident triggered panic as people were forced to move away from their homes while emergency teams attempted to contain the leak. Reports differ on the exact number of people initially hospitalised, with some officials citing 40, while the latest Times of India report puts the figure at 52. Four minors were among those affected, according to officials.

The affected residents were taken to hospitals for treatment, with some reportedly reaching medical facilities on their own while others were evacuated or transported by emergency personnel. The latest reports indicate that 12 patients had been discharged and those remaining under treatment were stable.

The incident also affected workers at the facility. The spread of the gas into residential areas made the situation particularly concerning, as the plant is located close to inhabited neighbourhoods.

Why Chlorine Leaks Are Hazardous

Chlorine is a highly reactive chemical commonly used to disinfect drinking water and kill harmful bacteria and other microorganisms at water treatment facilities. However, when released as a gas, it can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, particularly at higher concentrations.

Exposure can cause coughing, breathing difficulties, chest discomfort and eye irritation, while severe exposure can result in serious respiratory injury. Because chlorine gas can spread quickly from a leak, especially in areas close to residential neighbourhoods, such incidents require immediate evacuation, protective equipment and specialised emergency response.

NDRF Moves To Contain Leak

Police, fire brigade teams and the NDRF were deployed after the leak was reported. Authorities established a 200-metre exclusion zone around the plant as a precaution and moved residents from the surrounding area to safer locations.

NDRF personnel entered the affected area in protective equipment to deal with the leaking cylinder. The operation required emergency teams to work in a potentially hazardous environment while preventing further exposure to nearby residents.

The cylinder was eventually submerged in a tank containing water and caustic soda, helping neutralise the chlorine and bring the leak under control. Officials later reported that chlorine levels in the surrounding area were declining.

Senior Police Inspector Haresh Kalsekar said that no offence had been registered at that stage and that an inquiry would be conducted. The police response, along with the intervention of the fire brigade and NDRF, helped prevent the leak from causing further exposure in the surrounding locality.

Probe Questions Cylinder Storage

With the immediate emergency brought under control, attention has now shifted to why the leak occurred and whether adequate safety measures were in place at the facility.

Nagpur Collector Kumar Ashirwad has ordered a technical committee to investigate the incident. One of the key concerns raised by the Collector is the storage of the 900-kg chlorine cylinder in an open area rather than inside a designated sealed and contained room. The committee has been asked to examine the circumstances of the leak and assess whether established safety requirements were followed.

The investigation is particularly important because the cylinder contained a large quantity of chlorine and was positioned close to residential areas. A failure involving such a cylinder can pose a serious risk to people living and working nearby, making proper storage, regular inspections and emergency preparedness essential.

Reports have also referred to preliminary assessments concerning the condition of the cylinder. However, the exact technical cause of the leak remains subject to the ongoing inquiry and should not be treated as conclusively established until the committee submits its findings.

The administration’s response is therefore expected to focus not only on how the leak occurred but also on whether the plant had adequate systems for storing hazardous chemicals, detecting leaks and protecting nearby communities.
