Bengaluru witnessed heightened political tension on Monday, August 24, as BJP leaders and workers, backed by the JD(S), marched towards Vidhana Soudha demanding the resignation of Karnataka Minister B Nagendra over his alleged involvement in the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation fund case.
Police stopped the protesters near the legislature and took several BJP leaders, including state president B Y Vijayendra and Leader of Opposition R Ashoka, into preventive custody after a confrontation at the barricades. The BJP says Nagendra should be removed from the Cabinet to ensure accountability and a fair investigation into the alleged diversion of tribal welfare funds.
The protest comes on the same day the CBI reportedly sought the Karnataka Governor’s sanction to prosecute Nagendra in the case. The minister, however, has denied wrongdoing and said he is being targeted politically, while the Congress government has rejected the demand for his resignation and challenged the Opposition to debate the matter in the Assembly.
Why They Protested
The BJP’s demand centres on alleged financial irregularities in the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation, a state-run body intended to support the welfare and development of Scheduled Tribe communities. The Opposition has repeatedly questioned why Nagendra was re-inducted into the Karnataka Cabinet despite the controversy that had earlier forced him to resign as the minister handling the Scheduled Tribes Welfare portfolio in June 2024.
The BJP and JD(S) argue that keeping him in the Cabinet while investigations continue undermines public confidence and could affect the credibility of the proceedings. Their immediate demand is therefore clear: Nagendra should resign or be removed from the Cabinet until the allegations against him are resolved.
The controversy relates to the alleged diversion of funds belonging to the Valmiki Corporation. The CBI filed a chargesheet in June 2026 naming Nagendra among 30 accused and said around Rs 89.63 crore had been diverted through forged cheques and RTGS transactions across hundreds of bank accounts. The Enforcement Directorate had earlier alleged that around Rs 89.62 crore was diverted and named Nagendra as a primary accused in its prosecution complaint.
The agencies’ findings have become central to the BJP’s argument for his removal. At the same time, it is important to distinguish allegations and charges from a judicial finding of guilt. Nagendra has maintained that he did nothing wrong and has said that he is an accused, not a convict. He has also argued that the BJP is targeting him because he belongs to the Scheduled Tribe community.
How Row Escalated
The BJP and JD(S) had already disrupted proceedings in the Karnataka legislature for several days, demanding Nagendra’s removal. On August 23, Ashoka announced that the Opposition would lay siege to Vidhana Soudha on Monday, with the march beginning from Freedom Park. On Monday, a large number of party workers joined BJP leaders as they attempted to approach the legislature. Police had barricaded the entrances, and the situation became tense when protesters tried to move beyond the barricades. Pushing and jostling followed, after which several leaders and workers were detained in preventive custody.
The timing of Monday’s protest was significant because the CBI has sought the Governor’s sanction to prosecute Nagendra in the Valmiki Corporation case. According to reports, about Rs 84 crore of the allegedly diverted amount has since been recovered by the state government. A Lok Bhavan official said no decision had been taken on the prosecution request and that the matter was being referred to the Law Department for its opinion.
The Congress government has maintained that Nagendra should not be forced out merely because he has been named in a case. Minister Priyank Kharge questioned the BJP’s position and challenged the Opposition to debate the matter in the Assembly, while Chief Minister D K Shivakumar accused BJP and JD(S) legislators of “hooliganism” over repeated disruptions. Nagendra himself has ruled out resignation and said the allegations against him can be answered through the legislative process.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Political accountability is essential, particularly when public funds meant for the welfare of historically disadvantaged communities are at the centre of an investigation. At the same time, accountability must go hand in hand with due process: allegations, chargesheets and political accusations should not be treated as convictions.
The BJP has every right to demand answers and press for an independent investigation, while the government has a responsibility to provide clear explanations and allow the legal process to take its course. Protests are an important part of democracy, but they should remain peaceful, and legislative institutions must be allowed to function. Ultimately, the focus should remain on recovering every rupee due to beneficiaries, establishing responsibility through evidence and ensuring that welfare funds reach the people they were meant to serve.
