Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav recently stepped into a classroom at a Sandipani Government School, not as a ceremonial visitor but as a teacher, spending time interacting directly with students, engaging with teachers and inspecting classrooms, laboratories, sports facilities and other school infrastructure.
The visit, which drew widespread attention on social media through videos of the Chief Minister teaching students, was aimed at gaining a first-hand understanding of how government schools function beyond official reports.
During the visit, Dr. Yadav also highlighted the state’s ambitious education reforms centred on the Sandipani School initiative, under which Madhya Pradesh currently has around 370 world-class government schools and aims to expand the network to nearly 9,000 schools in the coming years.
State officials say the initiative is focused on improving infrastructure, technology-enabled learning and overall educational quality, while education observers note that direct engagement with classrooms can provide policymakers with valuable insights into the realities of teaching and learning that administrative reviews alone may not capture.
A Classroom Beyond Ceremony
Political visits to schools are often limited to inaugurations, speeches or brief inspections. Dr. Mohan Yadav’s visit sought to break that pattern by participating in classroom teaching and interacting with students during regular school hours.
Rather than restricting his visit to reviewing infrastructure from a distance, the Chief Minister reportedly observed classroom teaching, student participation, science laboratories, computer facilities, sports infrastructure and the overall academic environment.
Videos shared by the state government and circulated widely across social media showed him teaching students, asking questions and engaging with children in an informal classroom setting, sparking conversations about leadership and accountability in public education.
Officials described the exercise as an opportunity to understand the functioning of schools from the ground up rather than relying solely on departmental reports. Speaking about the broader vision behind the initiative, Dr. Mohan Yadav has repeatedly emphasised that education is central to Madhya Pradesh’s development and that quality government schools should offer students facilities comparable to those available in leading private institutions.
The Chief Minister has also stated that the state’s education reforms are aligned with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and are intended to strengthen foundational learning, improve employability and provide modern learning environments for children across the state.
Building the Sandipani Vision
The school visited by Dr. Yadav forms part of Madhya Pradesh’s flagship Sandipani School initiative, formerly known as the CM Rise School programme before being renamed Sandipani Vidyalayas. According to the state government, the new name draws inspiration from Maharishi Sandipani, revered in Indian tradition as the teacher of Lord Krishna, while continuing the programme’s original objective of transforming government schools into modern centres of learning.
Unlike conventional government schools, Sandipani Schools are equipped with smart classrooms, digital learning tools, modern science and computer laboratories, libraries, sports facilities and improved campus infrastructure. Officials say these schools are designed to ensure that children studying in the public education system receive learning opportunities comparable to those offered by many private schools, reducing educational disparities and improving access to quality education.
One of the key announcements highlighted during the Chief Minister’s visit was the scale of the state’s long-term ambition. Madhya Pradesh currently operates around 370 Sandipani Schools, but the government has outlined a vision to eventually establish nearly 9,000 world-class government schools across the state.
If realised, the expansion would represent one of India’s largest state-led investments in strengthening public school infrastructure and learning ecosystems. Government officials have also stressed that the initiative is not merely about constructing new buildings but about improving teaching quality, student engagement, teacher support and overall educational outcomes through sustained investment and better governance.
Education experts have long argued that meaningful school reforms require policymakers to understand classroom realities alongside statistical indicators. By spending time inside classrooms, interacting with teachers and students, and observing everyday school life, Dr. Yadav’s visit sought to reinforce the importance of evidence gathered through direct experience.
While a single classroom visit cannot fully represent the diversity of schools across the state, such interactions can help policymakers identify operational challenges, appreciate successful practices and better understand the needs of students and teachers.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Public education shapes not only individual futures but also the social and economic progress of an entire nation. While modern infrastructure, digital classrooms and better facilities are essential, meaningful educational reform ultimately depends on listening to students, empowering teachers and understanding the realities of learning beyond official presentations.
Dr. Mohan Yadav’s decision to spend time inside a classroom, rather than limiting his visit to ceremonial engagements, highlights the value of leaders experiencing public institutions from the ground level. Such initiatives can foster greater accountability, provided they are followed by sustained policy action, adequate funding and continued engagement with educators and communities.
