A seven-year-old Class 1 student, Ritika Kumari, died and several other children were injured after a staircase collapsed at Jatadhar Mishra Primary School in Amni, Khagaria, Bihar, on September 30. The incident occurred around 10 am as students were moving towards their classrooms. A three-member technical team has now been formed to investigate the collapse, including Khagaria Sadar SDO Dhananjay Kumar, District Education Officer Amarendra Kumar Gond and the Executive Engineer of the Building Construction Department, Mukti Narayan. Officials have said those found responsible will face legal action. The school has also been ordered to remain closed for two days.
One Child Dead, Others Injured As Staircase Collapse
The incident took place at the government primary school in Paswan Tola, Amni, under Mansi police station. The concrete staircase suddenly collapsed while children were present, trapping them beneath the debris. Ritika Kumari, a Class 1 student, died after being pulled from the rubble. Reports differ on the exact number of injured children, with initial official accounts reporting three injured students, while local reports later put the number at seven. The injured children were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Mansi SHO Deepak Kumar said the staircase suddenly collapsed and trapped several students. Khagaria Sadar SDO Dhananjay Kumar said a technical investigation had been ordered and that legal action would follow against anyone found responsible. A compensation of ₹4 lakh has also been provided to the family of the deceased child.
Three-Member Team To Examine
The inquiry team will examine the condition of the staircase and school building, construction or repair records, and the circumstances surrounding the collapse. The committee has been instructed to submit its report within two days, according to officials cited by Hindustan. The school has meanwhile been directed to suspend classes for two days.
The investigation has gained added significance following reports that the staircase had allegedly been in poor condition before the accident. A report published on October 1 said the school’s headteacher, Brajesh Kumar, had previously submitted a written complaint to the Mansi Block Resource Centre seeking repairs. The report said the application had been received but no timely repair was carried out. These claims are now among the matters being examined by the inquiry team.
Questions Over School Infrastructure
Reports have also raised questions about the staircase’s construction and maintenance. According to Jagran, the staircase was reportedly built in 2018, while local residents have alleged poor construction quality. These allegations have not yet been established by the investigation. The school reportedly has six classrooms, with three located on the upper floor, making the damaged staircase an important access route for students.
The incident has renewed concerns about the condition of government school infrastructure in the district, particularly where structural problems may be known before an accident occurs. The inquiry is expected to establish whether the collapse resulted from structural deterioration, construction quality, inadequate maintenance, or other factors, and whether any prior warnings were acted upon.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
A school should be one of the safest places for a child, and no family should have to worry that a basic structure could put their child’s life at risk. The tragedy in Khagaria is a reminder that inspections, maintenance and timely action on safety complaints cannot be treated as routine paperwork. At the same time, accountability should follow a fair and evidence-based investigation rather than assumptions or blame before the facts are established.
Ensuring safe classrooms requires cooperation between administrators, teachers, parents and local communities, with children’s safety remaining the shared priority. What steps do you think should be taken to ensure that warnings about unsafe school infrastructure are acted upon before tragedy strikes?
