A four-storey under-construction building collapsed in Delhi’s Rohini on Wednesday afternoon after heavy rainfall, trapping several people beneath the debris and triggering a large-scale rescue operation. The Delhi Fire Service said it received a distress call at around 4:20 pm, following which multiple fire tenders, police personnel and teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were rushed to the site.
Several people have been rescued, while search operations remain underway amid fears that more individuals could still be trapped. Officials have urged residents to stay away from the area as emergency responders continue rescue efforts.
Against Time
The collapse occurred near an MCD school in Rohini’s Sector 16, where heavy rainfall had lashed parts of the national capital earlier in the day. According to the Delhi Fire Service, the emergency call was received at 4:20 pm, prompting the deployment of multiple rescue teams. Police, NDRF personnel and local residents joined efforts to remove concrete slabs and twisted metal in the hope of reaching those trapped beneath the rubble.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Shashank Jaiswal said police secured the area, evacuated nearby buildings as a precaution and facilitated the movement of rescue vehicles while maintaining law and order. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the rainfall directly caused the collapse, and an investigation is expected.
Questions Over Construction Safety
The incident has once again drawn attention to the safety of under-construction buildings in rapidly developing urban neighbourhoods. While officials are focused on rescue operations, structural experts and civic authorities are expected to examine whether construction standards, approvals or weather-related factors contributed to the collapse.
Delhi and the wider National Capital Region have witnessed intense monsoon showers over recent days, leading to waterlogging, traffic disruptions and damage to infrastructure, although authorities have not established a direct link between the rainfall and this incident.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Every building under construction carries a responsibility that extends beyond bricks and concrete. Ensuring strict compliance with safety norms, regular inspections and accountability is essential to protecting workers, residents and passers-by.
As rescue teams continue their painstaking efforts, the immediate priority must remain saving lives and supporting affected families, while a transparent investigation should determine whether the tragedy could have been prevented. What more can governments, builders and citizens do together to strengthen construction safety and prevent such incidents from recurring?
