₹5 Lakh Demand and a Police Trap: Delhi Domestic Worker Arrested in Alleged Fake Rape Case

Police allege the woman demanded ₹5 lakh to withdraw a rape complaint before being arrested in a trap operation while accepting ₹2 lakh.

Delhi Police have arrested a 28-year-old domestic worker for allegedly filing a false rape complaint against a 56-year-old man in an attempt to extort money from his family.

The woman had approached police claiming she was sexually assaulted after completing household work at the man’s residence in Delhi’s Dwarka area on June 30. However, during the investigation, police allegedly found evidence suggesting that she demanded ₹5 lakh from the family in exchange for withdrawing the complaint.

Acting on the family’s allegations, officers laid a trap and arrested the woman while she was allegedly accepting ₹2 lakh. Police have registered a case against her under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), while the investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Investigation Led to Alleged Extortion Trap

According to Delhi Police, the woman initially lodged a rape complaint, alleging that the homeowner had sexually assaulted her after she had finished cleaning his residence. Given the seriousness of the allegation, police immediately initiated an investigation.

During the probe, investigators reportedly found that the woman had contacted the man’s son and allegedly demanded ₹5 lakh to settle the matter outside legal proceedings. Police said she warned the family that if they failed to pay, the rape case would continue.

Based on the family’s complaint, officers devised a trap after the alleged demand was negotiated down to ₹2 lakh. Police claimed that the woman arrived to collect the money, where she was apprehended with the cash in her possession. The amount was recovered as evidence, following which she was arrested.

Delhi Police said a case has been registered under Section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, dealing with extortion, and further legal proceedings are underway. Officials also stated that electronic evidence, including conversations related to the alleged demand for money, forms part of the investigation.

Case Highlights Importance of Fair Investigation

The incident has once again highlighted the need for thorough and impartial investigations in cases involving serious criminal allegations. Complaints of sexual assault require immediate attention, sensitivity and a survivor-centric approach, while investigations must also carefully examine all available evidence to establish the facts.

In this case, police maintain that the evidence collected during the inquiry pointed towards an alleged attempt to extort money rather than a genuine complaint.

Legal experts have often stressed that both false complaints and crimes of sexual violence carry significant consequences. A fabricated allegation, if proven in court, can severely affect the reputation and lives of those accused, while also risking public confidence in mechanisms meant to protect survivors.

At the same time, experts caution that isolated incidents should not be used to undermine or discredit the experiences of genuine survivors, many of whom already face considerable barriers in reporting sexual offences. As the matter proceeds through the judicial process, the allegations and the police findings will ultimately be tested before the courts.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Cases involving allegations of sexual violence demand the highest standards of sensitivity, fairness and due process. Every survivor deserves to be heard without prejudice, while every accused person deserves a fair investigation before guilt or innocence is determined.

If any complaint is found to have been deliberately fabricated for personal gain, the law must respond firmly, as such actions can erode trust in the justice system and make it more difficult for genuine survivors to come forward. At the same time, isolated instances should never discourage victims of sexual violence from seeking justice or reporting abuse.

Building public confidence requires impartial policing, evidence-based investigations and responsible public discourse that neither sensationalises allegations nor dismisses them prematurely. How can we strengthen systems that protect genuine survivors while ensuring accountability against those who misuse legal provisions?
