Six people, including five women, were killed and at least 12 others injured after a private passenger bus collided with a truck on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada National Highway near Dwarakunta in Telangana’s Suryapet district in the early hours of August 26.
The bus was travelling from Hyderabad towards Eluru via Vijayawada when it crashed into the truck. Three of the injured passengers are reportedly in critical condition and have been referred to hospitals in Vijayawada for advanced treatment.
According to preliminary police findings, the truck may have struck a road divider before coming to a halt, after which the bus hit it from behind. Suryapet Superintendent of Police K. Narasimha said the truck was carrying heavy industrial pillars and that the chain securing the load broke during the collision, causing the material to strike the bus.
Police are also examining whether overspeeding contributed to the crash. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed grief over the deaths and directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and assistance to the affected families.
Six Lives Lost In Seconds
The crash occurred between around 4:30 am and 5:20 am near Dwarakunta in Kodad mandal, on the NH-65 corridor connecting Hyderabad and Vijayawada. The private bus was reportedly carrying more than 40 passengers, with early reports putting the number at 42 or 43. The force of the collision severely damaged the front portion of the bus and left several passengers trapped inside, prompting an immediate rescue operation.
Six passengers died in the accident, five of them women. Several victims reportedly died at the scene, while their bodies were later moved for post-mortem examinations. Police were also working to establish and confirm the identities of the deceased. Among those identified in reports citing authorities were Y. Chinni, 32, B. Mary Joshna, 29, and Chennakeshavulu Nagendrababu, 21.
At least 12 passengers sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals in and around Kodad. Three of them were reportedly in critical condition and were referred to Vijayawada for better medical care. Initial reports had cited a higher number of injured, including around 20, but subsequent police-based accounts put the confirmed figure at at least 12 as the situation developed.
What Led To The Collision?
The exact circumstances of the crash are still being investigated. Preliminary police information suggests that the truck may have hit a road divider before stopping on the highway. The bus, approaching from behind, then collided with it. While several reports have described the truck as stationary at the time of impact, accounts of the vehicle’s movement have varied, making the final sequence of events subject to investigation.
Suryapet SP K. Narasimha provided an important detail about the truck’s cargo. According to him, it was carrying heavy industrial pillars, and the chain securing the material reportedly snapped during the collision. The pillars then struck the right side of the bus, worsening the impact and causing serious injuries to passengers.
Police are also examining whether excessive speed was a factor. Narasimha indicated that overspeeding was suspected during the preliminary investigation, although no final conclusion has been reached. Other possibilities, including driver fatigue or an overtaking manoeuvre, have been raised in local reports but have not been established by authorities.
The crash occurred on a busy inter-state route frequently used by passenger and commercial vehicles travelling between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The early-morning timing, the involvement of a fully occupied passenger bus and the presence of heavy material on the truck have all become relevant factors as investigators reconstruct what happened.
Officials Respond As Rescue Continues
Police and emergency personnel rushed to the accident site after receiving information about the collision. Rescue teams worked to free passengers from the badly damaged bus and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities. The severity of the damage meant that some passengers had to be extricated from the wreckage.
The incident also prompted intervention from the Telangana government. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed grief over the deaths and conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims. He directed Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao to ensure that those injured received advanced medical treatment and that the affected families were provided with necessary assistance.
The three critically injured passengers being shifted to Vijayawada reflects the authorities’ effort to provide specialised treatment to those requiring a higher level of medical care. Meanwhile, other injured passengers continued to receive treatment at hospitals closer to the accident site.
The police investigation is expected to examine several factors, including the condition and position of the truck, the bus driver’s speed, road and visibility conditions, the possibility of driver fatigue and how securely the truck’s heavy cargo had been fastened. Investigators will also have to establish whether any specific act of negligence contributed to the collision.
At present, the preliminary suspicion of overspeeding should not be interpreted as a final finding. A detailed investigation will be necessary before responsibility for the crash can be determined.

Six families have lost loved ones, while injured passengers and their families are now dealing with the physical, emotional and financial consequences of a tragedy that unfolded within seconds. While the investigation must establish what exactly caused the collision, it is equally important that the focus remains on preventing similar tragedies rather than assigning blame before the facts are known. Properly secured cargo, responsible speeds, adequate driver rest, safer highway design and timely emergency response can all play a role in reducing the human cost of road crashes.
