Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has recently held pivotal discussions aimed at transforming Eastern India into a major technology hub, potentially attracting significant investments in digital infrastructure and AI. These talks, which involve tech giant Google and various state officials, focus on establishing a ‘Tech Hub’ in West Bengal and expanding the digital economy across the region.
With Google already breaking ground on a $15 billion AI ecosystem in nearby Visakhapatnam, the move seeks to bridge the regional digital divide by creating thousands of skilled jobs and fostering a local manufacturing ecosystem for servers and drones. Stakeholders, including industry experts and government representatives, view this as a transformative step toward decentralising India’s tech growth beyond traditional hubs like Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
A Digital Gateway For The East
The proposed investments are expected to bring vital infrastructure, including high-capacity data centres and advanced subsea cable networks, to the eastern corridor. Highlighting the scale of this ambition, Minister Vaishnaw stated, “India is poised to emerge as a major trusted value chain and supply chain partner to the world in electronic manufacturing.
” Reports suggest that Google’s potential entry into West Bengal could mirror its “AI Patnam” project in Visakhapatnam, which occupies 600 acres of land and aims for gigawatt-scale AI processing. Beyond physical assets, the focus remains on human capital; Vaishnaw noted that AI-related jobs are growing at a rate of 15-20%, urging industry bodies like NASSCOM to partner with the government to prepare a workforce capable of “riding the new wave of technology.”
Bridging The Regional Tech Divide
Historically, the wave of India’s digital revolution has been concentrated in the southern and western states, leaving Eastern India with a significant gap in industrial and digital infrastructure. The recent completion of the Dedicated Freight Corridor and the planned subsea cable from Visakhapatnam to Australia and the US provide the necessary backbone for this shift. By positioning West Bengal and the surrounding regions as an export and technology hub, the government aims to fulfill a long-standing promise of industrial revival, offering a much-needed boost to local economies that have been seeking a transition from traditional industries to new-age technology.
