A 28-year-old pregnant woman from Uttar Pradesh safely delivered a baby inside the crowded general coach of the Pune-Supaul Express after Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and fellow passengers responded swiftly to a medical emergency near Ahilyanagar station on Saturday evening.
Rukhsana Khatun, who was travelling with her husband Jameel Belawar from Pune to Bihar’s Supaul district, reportedly went into labour while the train was moving at high speed.
With no doctor available onboard and the compartment packed with passengers, Central Railway activated “Operation Matrishakti”, a special humanitarian initiative aimed at assisting pregnant women during emergencies on trains.
RPF personnel, along with women passengers, created a safe space inside the coach and helped conduct the delivery before medical teams shifted the mother and newborn to a hospital at Ahilyanagar station. Railway officials later confirmed that both mother and baby were healthy and stable.
The incident has since drawn praise online, with many appreciating the calm and compassionate response of railway staff and fellow travellers during the crisis.
Emergency Inside Crowded Train Coach
The incident took place aboard Train No. 11401 Pune-Supaul Express on Saturday evening after the train departed Pune Railway Station on schedule for its long journey towards Bihar’s Supaul district.
Among the passengers travelling in the crowded general compartment were Rukhsana Khatun and her husband Jameel Belawar, migrant workers reportedly returning home after spending time in Maharashtra. According to reports, the couple planned to deboard at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction in Uttar Pradesh before continuing their onward journey.
However, as the train approached Ahilyanagar station in Maharashtra, Rukhsana suddenly began experiencing intense labour pain. With the train travelling at speed and the general coach overcrowded, the family struggled to access immediate medical help.
Panic quickly spread among nearby passengers as the situation became increasingly urgent. Fellow travellers alerted railway authorities through the emergency response system, following which Central Railway immediately activated “Operation Matrishakti”.
Railway officials stated that RPF constable Somnath Pathade and head constable Vishwajeet Kakde rushed to the coach after receiving the alert. Recognising the seriousness of the emergency, the personnel coordinated with women passengers in the compartment to create a protective enclosure around the expectant mother using sarees, shawls and bags to ensure privacy and space inside the packed coach.
The officers also stayed in constant touch with railway control rooms and station authorities to arrange medical support at the nearest station.
According to eyewitness accounts quoted in media reports, anxious passengers waited silently as the delivery took place inside the moving train. Moments later, the cries of the newborn echoed through the compartment, prompting applause and visible relief among those onboard.
Railway officials said an ambulance and doctors were already stationed at Ahilyanagar railway station after prior coordination by the RPF and railway administration. Both mother and child were immediately shifted to a nearby civil hospital for medical observation, where doctors later confirmed that they were stable and healthy.
Operation Matrishakti Showcases Railway Humanity
The incident has once again brought attention to “Operation Matrishakti”, an initiative launched by the Railway Protection Force to assist pregnant women who face medical emergencies during train travel. Indian Railways officials have previously stated that the initiative focuses on ensuring timely intervention, emergency coordination and humanitarian support in situations involving childbirth and maternal distress onboard trains.
In this case, railway authorities credited the calm and coordinated response of RPF personnel and passengers for preventing what could have become a life-threatening emergency. Officials noted that overcrowded general compartments often pose additional challenges during medical crises due to limited mobility, lack of onboard healthcare facilities and delayed access to doctors. Despite these difficulties, the railway staff reportedly acted with urgency and composure.
Media reports also highlighted the role played by women passengers who stepped forward to assist Rukhsana during labour. While railway officials managed communication and logistical support, fellow travellers helped comfort the mother and provide emotional assistance during the delivery. Many passengers later described the incident as a rare moment of unity and compassion among strangers travelling together under difficult circumstances.
The story has since gained significant attention on social media, where users praised the railway staff and passengers for their humanity and teamwork. Several users described the episode as a reminder that acts of kindness and cooperation continue to exist in everyday public life despite growing social divisions and stressful travel conditions.
Others called for better emergency medical preparedness in long-distance trains, especially in overcrowded general compartments frequently used by economically vulnerable travellers.
According to government data shared in earlier official statements, the RPF has handled several childbirth-related emergencies over recent years under Operation Matrishakti, helping ensure safe deliveries through rapid coordination between onboard personnel, station authorities and local healthcare services.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This incident aboard the Pune-Supaul Express is more than just a story about an emergency childbirth on a moving train. It is also a powerful reminder of how empathy, collective responsibility and timely action can transform moments of fear into stories of hope. In a crowded general coach often associated with discomfort, exhaustion and struggle, railway personnel and ordinary passengers came together to protect two vulnerable lives without hesitation.
At a time when public discourse is frequently dominated by conflict and division, such moments remind us that humanity still survives in everyday spaces in train compartments, on platforms and among strangers who may never meet again after the journey ends. The response by RPF personnel and fellow passengers reflects the importance of compassion-led public service and the value of remaining calm and supportive during crises.
