Chandranath Rath, a 41-year-old Indian Air Force (IAF) veteran and personal assistant to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Madhyamgram, West Bengal, on May 6. The incident occurred just two days after the state’s assembly election results were declared, as Rath was returning home from a campaign office.
While the BJP alleges a targeted political assassination amid post-poll tensions, local police have formed a special task force to investigate all possible motives. The tragedy highlights the fragile state of civil peace in the region following a high-stakes electoral battle.
A Life of Discipline and Service
Before stepping into the volatile world of Bengal politics, Rath dedicated nearly twenty years of his life to the Indian Air Force. An alumnus of the Rahara Ramakrishna Mission, he was deeply influenced by the institution’s spiritual and disciplined values, reportedly even considering a monastic life in his youth.
After taking voluntary retirement from the IAF and a brief stint in the corporate sector, he joined Suvendu Adhikari’s team in 2019. Known as a “trusted troubleshooter” and a soft-spoken backroom operator, Rath’s transition from military service to political coordination was marked by a reputation for efficiency and a low public profile.
Deep Roots and Sudden Loss
The connection between the Rath and Adhikari families spans over two decades, rooted in their shared history in Purba Medinipur. Rath’s mother, Hasi Rath, was a local panchayat leader during the Trinamool Congress’s early expansion before the family shifted allegiance to the BJP in 2020. On the night of the attack, motorcycle-borne gunmen intercepted Rath’s SUV near Doharia and opened fire at point-blank range.
“We have identified a suspicious vehicle and are scanning CCTV footage; this appears to be a pre-planned ambush,” a senior police official noted. The sudden demise has halted internal party discussions about Rath potentially taking on a significant administrative role in the new political setup.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that no political victory should ever be watered by the blood of its citizens. The transition from the military where one protects the nation to the civil sphere should be a journey of continued service, not a path toward a violent end.
Violence has no place in a healthy democracy, and the recurring cycle of post-election retaliation in West Bengal serves only to erode the public’s trust in the rule of law. We call for a swift, transparent investigation that transcends party lines to ensure justice for the bereaved family.
