A woman, believed to be in her 50s, tragically died on Tuesday morning after an old iron footbridge collapsed into a drain in North Delhi’s Roop Nagar. The incident occurred around 9:30 am near Block 3, close to a Mother Dairy booth, when the 60-foot steel structure suddenly gave way.
Despite being declared structurally unsafe in March 2025 and officially closed by authorities, local residents continued to use the bridge to save time. Rescue teams from the Delhi Police, Fire Department, and NDRF recovered the woman’s body from the strong currents after a 90-minute search. The Delhi government has since formed a three-member committee to probe the collapse and ordered a city-wide safety audit of similar structures.
Structural Negligence and Fatal Consequences
The victim, identified by locals as a destitute woman who often sat near the bridge, was reportedly on the structure when it buckled with a sound “like a blast.” Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene where the bridge swayed violently before plunging into the Najafgarh drain.
Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma stated, “The bridge was constructed approximately 33 years ago and had significantly deteriorated. We have constituted a committee to examine all aspects… Responsibility will be fixed based on the findings.”
Meanwhile, the North Delhi Police have registered a case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death by negligence.
A Pattern of Preventable Tragedies
This collapse is not an isolated event but part of a grim trend of failing urban infrastructure in the capital. Data reveals that nearly 90 people have drowned in Delhi’s open drains and canals since 2024.
While authorities claim the Roop Nagar bridge was barricaded in July 2025, residents argue that the lack of a viable alternative route led people including hundreds of school children to risk the crossing daily. “Had this happened an hour earlier during school time, the loss of life would have been catastrophic,” noted a local resident.
The incident highlights a systemic failure where “unsafe” labels are applied, but no immediate repairs or replacements are provided to the community.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we believe that every citizen deserves the right to safe, dignified movement within their city. The death of this woman is not just an “accident”; it is a stark reminder of the cost of administrative apathy.
Declaring a bridge “unsafe” and putting up a flimsy barricade is a half-measure that shifts the burden of safety onto the most vulnerable.
True governance requires empathy understanding that a “closed” bridge is still a lifeline for a student or a worker. We need proactive infrastructure audits and timely reconstructions, not just post-tragedy probes
