On Wednesday night, March 11, 2026, National Conference President and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an assassination attempt while attending a wedding function at the Royal Park banquet hall in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu. A 63-year-old local resident, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, approached the veteran leader from behind and fired a shot from a licensed .32 revolver at point-blank range.
The prompt intervention of Abdullah’s Z+ security detail and personnel from the National Security Guard (NSG) prevented a tragedy. They quickly deflected the weapon and overpowered the assailant before he could fire a second shot.

Jammu and Kashmir Police later confirmed that two alert officers an inspector and a sub-inspector—quickly intervened and disarmed the attacker. They overpowered him before he could fire again and removed the remaining bullets from his revolver, preventing any further danger at the scene.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed relief on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Allah is kind. My father had a very close shave… It was only the close protection team that deflected the shot.” However, Surinder Choudhary raised serious concerns over the lack of local police presence at the high-profile event, calling the lapse “inexcusable” given that several top leaders of the state were present.
Decades of Premeditated Hostility
Interrogations of Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of the Purani Mandi area who owns local shops, revealed a disturbing motive behind the attack on Farooq Abdullah. According to investigators, the suspect claimed he had been nurturing a “personal agenda” against the veteran leader for nearly 20 years and was merely waiting for the “right opportunity” to act.
Jamwal reportedly identifies himself as the chairman of a local group called ‘Jagran Manch.’ However, officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Police said he was heavily under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. The weapon used in the attack was his own licensed revolver, which has raised serious questions about how an armed and intoxicated individual managed to bypass initial security layers at a venue hosting multiple Z+ protectees.
The incident has also revived concerns about security threats faced by the Abdullah family in the region.
