India finished its campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games 2026 in Japan with a record 114 medals, comprising 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze, securing fourth place in the overall standings. The contingent surpassed its previous best of 108 medals at the 2023 edition, despite sending a smaller contingent.

Para-athletes delivered performances across athletics, badminton, archery, swimming, shooting and other disciplines, highlighting India’s growing presence in international para-sport.

Record Medal Haul

Para-athletics led India’s medal tally with 65 medals, including 22 gold. Para-badminton contributed 16 medals, while para-swimming recorded a significant improvement, increasing its contribution from one medal at the previous edition to 11. Para-table tennis also improved its tally, securing seven bronze medals. India’s performances across these disciplines reflected the contribution of athletes with different impairments and the growing breadth of the country’s para-sport talent.

Standout Performances

Several athletes delivered memorable performances during the campaign. Navdeep Singh won bronze in the men’s javelin throw F40/41 event with a throw of 42.55 metres. Ajay Kumar secured bronze in the men’s 400m T64, clocking 53.61 seconds, while Sandeep won gold in the same event with a world-record time of 52.28 seconds. Parmod Bijarnia retained his silver medal in the men’s 1,500m T46, finishing in 4:09.65. These results contributed to India’s strong para-athletics campaign.

Badminton And Archery

Para-badminton produced a notable all-Indian final when Nitesh Kumar defeated fellow Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat 21-18, 21-16 to win gold in men’s singles SL3 on October 23. Bhagat took silver. Thulasimathi Murugesan secured silver in women’s singles SU5 after losing to China’s Yang Qiuxia 18-21, 11-21. Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan also won silver in women’s singles SH6, losing to China’s Li Fengmei 12-21, 13-21.

In para-archery, Bhawna Choudhary and Pooja Jatyan won silver in women’s recurve doubles after losing to China. Their result added to India’s medal tally in a discipline where precision and consistency are essential. Together, the badminton and archery results demonstrated the country’s competitiveness in both individual and team events.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

India’s medal haul is worth celebrating not only for the numbers but also for the dedication of athletes who continue to challenge barriers in sport and society. Navdeep Singh, Nitesh Kumar, Thulasimathi Murugesan, Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan, Ajay Kumar, Pramod Bhagat, Bhawna Choudhary, Pooja Jatyan and Parmod Bijarnia represent the range of talent contributing to India’s para-sport achievements.

However, recognition must go beyond medal ceremonies. Sustained funding, accessible training facilities, inclusive coaching and long-term athlete support are essential to ensure that persons with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate and excel.

How can India turn these achievements into lasting improvements for para-sport at the grassroots level?
