Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and singer Zubeen Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sarma, were detained by Assam CID’s Special Investigation Team on Wednesday following the deepening probe into Garg’s death in Singapore.
Mahanta was arrested at Delhi airport before being transferred to Guwahati, while Sarma was picked up by another team in Rajasthan, having spent the night in Gurugram. The arrests come in response to widespread calls for a transparent investigation after the much-loved Assamese singer tragically died in a scuba diving accident on September 19, 2025.
Probe Intensifies Amid Emotional Farewell
Mahanta was taken into custody at roughly 12:30 am at Delhi airport and flown to Guwahati, marking a major development in the CID investigation. Meanwhile, Sarma’s detention from Rajasthan is expected to swiftly bring him to Assam for further questioning.
Officials said the SIT is working “with urgency and integrity” to clarify the circumstances leading to Garg’s untimely death. The CID’s actions respond to public pressure for impartiality and efficiency in high profile cases, especially those that touch cultural hearts.
Final Rites and Public Mourning
Zubeen Garg’s passing sent shockwaves throughout Assam, leading to massive outpourings of grief. His remains were repatriated from Singapore to Delhi, then to Guwahati, where the funeral took place on the outskirts of the city in Kamarkuchi village on September 23.
The state government honoured Garg with a ceremonial gun salute. The singer’s sister, Palme Borthakur, performed the final rites, while his widow, Garima Saikia, and hundreds of fans and admirers attended the emotional farewell, highlighting the singer’s cultural influence and deep ties to the community.
