Women Lead Rescue Efforts, Providing Food and Shelter to Hundreds Stranded in Himachal’s Lahaul-Spiti Floods

Between August 25 and 27, relentless heavy rains triggered flash floods and landslides in Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, blocking key highways and leaving hundreds of tourists, residents, and travellers stranded. Women across several villages rose as frontline responders, opening community kitchens, sharing food supplies, and providing shelter to those caught in the deluge.

The district administration, under Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana, coordinated rescue operations with agencies including the Border Roads Organisation and local volunteer groups. Essential services such as electricity and telecommunications were restored within days, while evacuation and relief efforts continue in remote valleys where nomadic shepherds remain trapped.

Community Kitchens and Compassion: Women Leading Relief

When the Manali-Leh highway and numerous link roads were rendered impassable by inundation and landslides, local women quickly mobilised to address the urgent needs of stranded people. In villages like Keylong and Sissu, women’s groups such as the Sissu Mahila Mandal established community kitchens (langars) from their own food stocks to prepare and distribute meals.

Their efforts extended beyond meals, offering warm shelter and blankets to tourists, truck drivers, and villagers caught off guard by the sudden disruption. “The women of Lahaul-Spiti have shown remarkable solidarity and compassion during this disaster,” Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana stated. The administration provided dry rations, quilts, and sleeping bags to hundreds, ensuring basic needs were met while rescue teams worked to clear roads and arrange evacuations.

Heavy Rains Trigger Widespread Destruction and Displacement

The intense, continuous rainfall caused extensive damage across the district, washing away bridges in Miyar Valley and flooding roads critical for movement and supplies. Approximately 250 to 300 people were stranded between Pagal Nala and Teling Nala, while 148 passengers in over 100 vehicles were trapped on the Jispa-Stingri stretch. Another 80 to 90 individuals were stranded near Udaipur.

Special medical evacuations were carried out, including that of a pregnant woman and critical patients who were initially transported to Keylong Regional Hospital and later airlifted to Kullu with medical staff support. Despite power outages and communication disruptions, restoration efforts were rapid; telecom services resumed by August 27, and electricity was restored by August 29.

The Border Roads Organisation and Public Works Department worked tirelessly to clear blocked roads despite ongoing challenges. Meanwhile, a rescue team was dispatched to Miyar Valley to evacuate 30-35 nomadic Gaddis stranded by the floods, emphasizing the complexity of response in the district’s difficult terrain.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The unfolding crisis in Lahaul-Spiti lays bare the vulnerability of mountain regions to extreme weather events intensified by climate change. Yet, amid the destruction, what shines brightest is the empathy and grassroots action demonstrated by local women who became unsung heroes. Their initiative in opening kitchens and sheltering strangers exemplifies the best of communal humanity, often filling the gaps when official systems strain under natural disasters.

The Logical Indian urges a dual approach: to amplify government disaster preparedness and infrastructure strengthening while nurturing and recognising community resilience built on kindness and cooperation. As these women demonstrated, the true strength of society lies in caring hands ready to act with compassion.
