#Lalitgate: The Connection Between Sushma Swaraj And Lalit Modi

This controversy erupted after Times Now investigation exposed emails which showed that she had helped ex-IPL commissioner Lalit Modi , who is wanted by the Enforcement Directorate in relation to a Rs 425 crore forex violation and a fugitive on run since 2010.

According to email Sushma Swaraj helped Lalit Modi to overstay in London, after his passport was canceled by the Indian government. The British government obliged to External Minister’s request and Modi received his travel documents within 18 days.

The email comprised of conversation between Lalit Modi, Swaraj Kaushal, the foreign minister’s husband, and Keith Vaz, a British lawmaker of Indian-origin. . Kaushal and the minister’s daughter Bansuri Kaushal, who had worked as a legal counsel for Modi, are on CC of some of these emails.

It was extended upto 2016. Prior to Swaraj’s intervention, the UPA government had told UK to not grant Modi travel documents. If UK did that, it would affect bilateral ties, the UPA government had said.

Sushma Swaraj said that she did this on humanitarian ground so that Lalit modi can be with his wife in Lisbon during her surgery. While Instagram photos show Modi partying with celebrities like Naomi Campbell and Paris Hilton in foreign locations. Also from email, Swaraj Kaushal took help of Modi and indirectly Indian born British MP Keith Vaz to get his nephew admitted in Sussex university.

BJP chief  Amit Shah and union home minister Rajnath Singh also came out in open support of Sushma Swaraj and said “there was nothing wrong in what the external affairs minister did.”
