The crucial decision was finalised during a meeting of newly elected MLAs in Kolkata chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, following the BJP’s resounding victory in the 2026 State Assembly elections where it secured 207 out of 294 seats. Adhikari emerged as the unanimous choice due to his extensive administrative experience, proven grassroots organisational skills, and his phenomenal dual electoral victories over the incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in both Bhabanipur and Nandigram.
