Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has emerged as the leading candidate to become Nepal’s interim Prime Minister amid ongoing political turmoil triggered by youth-led protests.

At 73, Karki is widely respected for her integrity, independence, and landmark rulings during her tenure as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice from 2016 to 2017. She accepted the call from the Gen Z protest movement that swept the nation, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and dismantling his government.

This detailed report covers the background, context, and implications of Karki’s nomination, drawing on recent developments and official statements.

A Historic Choice Amid Crisis

The recent wave of demonstrations dubbed the “Gen Z revolution” began as protests against a government ban on social media but quickly evolved into a broader anti-corruption and pro-democracy movement. The unrest resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people and over 1,000 injuries, with significant destruction to public property including the Parliament building and residences of key political figures.

In response to the protests, KP Sharma Oli resigned, creating a power vacuum amid national instability. In a nationwide virtual meeting involving thousands of young protesters, Karki was nominated as the interim Prime Minister because of her reputation for zero tolerance towards corruption and judicial independence.

Gen Z youth leaders underscored that she represented a fresh, credible alternative to the entrenched political establishment.

Negotiations and Official Responses

Formal talks are currently underway between Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel, Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel, and representatives of the Gen Z protesters to constitutionally formalise Karki’s appointment. The discussions aim to stabilise the political environment and set a timetable for general elections within six months, ensuring public participation in choosing a permanent government.

The Gen Z movement also called for the formation of a national cleanliness committee and coordination with the army to rebuild the country. Meanwhile, CPN (Maoist Centre) leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) expressed solidarity with the protesters while urging restraint and adherence to a democratic and constitutional framework.

Karki herself has stated that her first priority will be to honour the youth who lost their lives during the protests and to lead efforts towards national development and unity.

Karki’s Vision and Regional Ties

Sushila Karki has publicly praised India’s longstanding support for Nepal, expressing respect and a positive impression of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasising the special relationship between the two countries.

Born into a family with strong historical ties to Nepal’s political leaders, Karki’s background in political science and law, combined with her career as a judge, equips her to navigate Nepal’s complex political terrain.

She has vowed to initiate a new beginning for Nepal, focusing on transparency, accountability, and the aspirations of the younger generation. Her interim government is expected to spearhead anti-corruption measures and pave the way for inclusive democratic governance.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The nomination of Sushila Karki by Nepal’s youth-led Gen Z movement is a profound example of how peaceful civic engagement can demand real political change and renewal. It highlights the crucial role of empathy, integrity, and dialogue in resolving conflicts and rebuilding nations.

The Logical Indian supports efforts that seek transparency, social justice, and democratic renewal through non-violent means and credible leadership.
