Mofakkerul Islam, an advocate and former candidate of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, was arrested by the West Bengal Police on April 3, 2026, from Bagdogra Airport while allegedly attempting to leave the state. He is accused of orchestrating protests in Malda that led to the gherao and confinement of several Special Intensive Revision (SIR) officers for over nine hours.
Police claim the protest disrupted election-related duties and posed a serious law-and-order challenge, while investigations continue with multiple arrests already made. The incident has triggered political debate amid ongoing electoral roll revisions.
Protests, Confinement and Police Action
According to officials, tensions escalated when a large group gathered to protest alleged discrepancies in voter list revisions. The situation turned confrontational as demonstrators reportedly surrounded a government office, preventing SIR officials from leaving and effectively confining them for several hours. Authorities later intervened to secure their release.
A senior police official stated that the gherao “obstructed lawful public duty and endangered administrative functioning,” adding that video footage and witness testimonies indicate Islam’s role in mobilising and addressing the crowd. Police further said that his arrest followed coordinated tracking efforts, suggesting he had been avoiding questioning after the incident. No physical injuries were reported, but the episode has been described as a significant breach of order.
Electoral Context and Rising Tensions
The unrest comes at a politically sensitive time, with electoral roll revisions underway across parts of West Bengal. In regions like Malda, where demographic and political dynamics are closely contested, such processes often generate anxiety among residents.
Reports indicate that the protests were driven by concerns over alleged deletions or discrepancies in voter lists, prompting mobilisation by local groups and political actors. Itahar, from where Islam had contested in 2021, is among constituencies where political competition has remained intense. Authorities have confirmed that several individuals have been detained in connection with the case, and further action may follow as digital and on-ground evidence is examined.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The Malda episode underscores the delicate balance between democratic dissent and institutional integrity. While citizens have every right to question electoral processes and demand transparency, actions that restrict the movement or safety of officials risk undermining democratic norms.
At the same time, enforcement agencies must act with fairness and clarity to ensure their actions are not perceived as excessive or politically driven. Strengthening trust requires open communication, credible grievance mechanisms, and a shared commitment to non-violence. How can we ensure electoral concerns are addressed without disrupting democratic processes?
