A 36-year-old MNC executive, Shubhankar Denre, and his wife, Papiya, were arrested by the Howrah Rural Police on Friday for the premeditated murder of Shubhankar’s 62-year-old mother, Sushama Denre, in Jagatballavpur. The victim’s body was discovered on Thursday evening, trussed and stuffed into a sack abandoned by a roadside in Fatikgachhi.

Investigations revealed that the couple strangled the elderly woman because they were infuriated by her extensive charitable work specifically her habit of feeding and providing medical aid to beggars which they viewed as a financial drain. After a detailed interrogation and a review of local CCTV footage, both suspects confessed to the crime and have been remanded to custody.

A Fatal Clash Over Compassion

The investigation into the gruesome discovery quickly shifted toward the victim’s household when inconsistencies arose in the son’s initial statements. According to Additional SP (Rural) Santosh Mondal, the couple admitted during questioning that they had planned the murder days in advance. “The son confessed that he and his wife strangled his mother on Wednesday night,” SP Mondal stated.

The motive was rooted in a bitter domestic dispute: Sushama was deeply committed to social service, often spending her own money to buy medicines and meals for the local destitute. S

hubhankar, who works for a prominent firm in Salt Lake, reportedly felt his mother’s altruism was “squandering” his earnings, leading to violent arguments and, eventually, a cold-blooded conspiracy to silence her.

Betrayal of a Life Dedicated to Service

The background of the tragedy reveals a stark contrast between the victim’s selflessness and the suspects’ resentment. Local residents in Fatikgachhi described Sushama as a “mother figure” to the neighborhood’s marginalized, often seen distributing blankets or arranging clinic visits for the elderly poor.

However, as Shubhankar tightened his control over the family’s finances to stop her spending, Sushama reportedly began selling her personal jewellery to continue her mission.

On the night of the murder, the couple allegedly pinned her down; Shubhankar held her limbs while Papiya used a towel to strangle her. They then waited until the early hours of the morning to transport her body in a sack, dumping it in a thicket near the Jagatballavpur-Udaynarayanpur road.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This incident is a chilling reminder of how a culture of extreme materialism can erode the most sacred of human bonds. At The Logical Indian, we believe that empathy and kindness are the cornerstones of a civilised society, yet here, a woman’s life was taken precisely because she chose to live by those values.

It is profoundly tragic that a mother who dedicated her golden years to healing the broken was met with such brutality from her own flesh and blood. This crime is not just a legal violation but a moral bankruptcy that challenges our collective conscience.

We must reflect on the growing intolerance toward the elderly and the “inconvenience” of charity in a world increasingly obsessed with personal gain.
