The bus was travelling from Balrampur district in neighbouring Chhattisgarh to Mahuadanr in Latehar for a wedding ceremony. According to police, the vehicle lost control while navigating the hilly road and overturned, throwing passengers into chaos and panic.
Casualties, Injuries and Official Confirmation
Latehar Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav confirmed that five passengers, including four women, died on the spot. “A bus carrying a marriage party was coming from Balrampur district in Chhattisgarh for a wedding at Mahuadanr in Latehar. The bus overturned, and five people died on the spot,” he told PTI.
Two more passengers later succumbed to their injuries during treatment at hospital, taking the death toll to seven. Officials said that at least five of the deceased were women, highlighting the disproportionate impact of the tragedy on female passengers.
More than 80 people were injured in the accident, with several reported to be in critical condition. Sub-divisional officials said around 60 injured passengers were admitted to the Mahuadanr Community Health Centre, while others were taken to nearby private hospitals.
Those with severe injuries were referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi for specialised treatment. Medical teams worked through the day to stabilise patients, while anxious relatives gathered outside hospitals, waiting for news.
Brake Failure Claim and Driver’s Account
Preliminary information suggests that mechanical failure may have played a role in the accident. The bus driver reportedly told authorities that the vehicle’s brakes failed while descending the hilly stretch.
According to officials, he claimed to have attempted emergency measures, including using the handbrake and switching off the engine, but was unable to regain control.
While the claim of brake failure is yet to be independently verified, police have said it will be a key focus of the investigation. Transport and traffic officials are expected to examine the bus’s maintenance records, fitness certification, and whether the vehicle was overloaded at the time of the accident.
