A violent clash erupted between workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the Domkal block of Murshidabad, West Bengal, late Wednesday night. The incident, occurring just hours before the first phase of the state assembly elections, took place in the Sardarpara area of Raipur.

Three individuals from both sides sustained injuries, with one CPI(M) worker currently in critical condition. While local residents managed to shift the injured to the hospital, TMC MP Abu Taher Khan has blamed “miscreants” for inciting unrest to intimidate voters, while police have stepped up patrolling to maintain order.

Escalation In Sardarpara: A Midnight Crisis

The confrontation began as a heated verbal argument between the two rival groups but quickly spiraled into physical violence. According to local witnesses, sharp weapons were allegedly used during the skirmish, leaving the Sardarpara area in a state of panic.

The critically injured CPI(M) worker was rushed by local residents to the Domkal Super Speciality Hospital, where he is currently undergoing intensive treatment. Commenting on the rising tensions across the district, TMC MP Abu Taher Khan alleged that the violence was a planned attempt by opposition-backed elements to spread fear.

“The bombing and clashes are being carried out under the cover of darkness to scare away voters,” Khan stated, referring to both the Domkal clash and a separate bombing incident in nearby Nawda

The Shadow Of Poll-Eve Unrest

This clash is the latest in a series of volatile incidents that have gripped Murshidabad, a district historically known for its high-stakes political rivalry. With 2,400 companies of central forces deployed across West Bengal double the number from the 2021 polls the Election Commission had hoped for a peaceful run-up to the voting day.

However, despite the presence of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and a high-profile flag march held earlier this week, the Raipur incident underscores the fragile security situation on the ground.

Following the clash, district police officials confirmed that additional forces have been mobilised to the Sardarpara

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that the ballot box should be the only place where political battles are fought. The use of sharp weapons and the hospitalisation of workers is not “politics” it is a failure of our collective democratic spirit.

Violence does not just injure individuals; it wounds the trust of the common citizen in the electoral process. We urge the workers of all political parties to embrace the path of dialogue and empathy, remembering that after the elections are over, we must all coexist in the same community. Peace is a prerequisite for progress, and no political victory is worth the cost of a human life.
