West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has launched a scathing verbal offensive against Left-leaning faculty members and student groups at Jadavpur University (JU), declaring in the State Legislative Assembly that it is the “right time to uproot the seeds of Naxalism” in Bengal.
His remarks coincided with the assembly passing the West Bengal Universities and Colleges (Administration and Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which grants the government broad authority to transfer university faculty and staff across state institutions. While the Chief Minister framed the legislation and his warnings as necessary measures to weed out “anti-national” brainwashing and modernise neglected universities, faculty representatives from the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) have condemned the move as a direct, politically motivated assault on academic autonomy.
Assembly Showdown
Speaking on the floor of the House during the passage of the contentious transfer bill, Adhikari alleged that anti-national elements within the campus had crossed lines by raising divisive slogans and glorifying Maoist figures. “Those who say ‘Red Salute to Kishenji’ have all been identified.
Not all of them are students… those engaged in this brainwashing also need some strong medicine,” Adhikari stated. He further claimed that the government plans to turn JU into a “Centre of Excellence” backed by a combined ₹1,300 crore package from the Centre and State, whilst proposing to invoke the new transfer bill to relocate senior Left-leaning professors to underdeveloped regional universities.
While JUTA as a body withheld an official statement on the floor debate, a senior member and professor at JU responded on condition of anonymity, noting that the legislative amendment has been engineered “specifically to target the JUTA” and silence institutional dissent.
Rising Campus Tensions
The confrontation follows weeks of ideological skirmishes at Jadavpur University between Leftist student organisations and the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Raising the political stakes, the Chief Minister warned that his administration could institute a commission of inquiry to reopen the 1970 campus assassination of former JU Vice-Chancellor Dr Gopal Sen. Adhikari also called for a “three-month war” against Naxalism influence, going so far as to urge community Durga Puja committees to deny bookstall spaces to Left parties that do not write on traditional festivities.
Student unions, however, have pushed back firmly, asserting that the administration’s hostile rhetoric and transfer policies are heavy-handed tactics designed to break JU’s historic tradition of campus democracy and critical thought, while evading demands to conduct long-pending student union elections.

Universities are the cornerstone of any flourishing democracy, functioning as sanctuaries for debate, nonconformity, and critical intellectual enquiry.
Equating academic dissent and student activism with sedition or violent extremism damages the delicate fabric of our higher education system. Using punitive legislative transfers and aggressive rhetoric to silence teachers and students compromises institutional autonomy, fostering fear instead of scholarship. Rather than adopting an adversarial posture that fractures the academic community, governance should prioritise constructive dialogue, institutional trust, and the celebration of diverse perspectives.
When politics enters classrooms as a tool of intimidation, our collective democratic intellect suffers. Can universities truly serve as centres of excellence if diverse viewpoints and peaceful dissent are met with punitive state intervention?
