A business man in Gurgaon sends video message to his contacts on Whats-app before committing suicide. The 55-year-old deceased contractor also left a suicide note explaining the circumstances of his death. The eldest son of the deceased, who is currently in London, wrote a complaint top police blaming his sister-in-law for the death of his father.

India recorded a total of 258,075 in 2012, that is an alarmingly high number which deserves immediate attention. Investment in suicide prevention helplines and counseling center’s to deal with suicides should be given high priority to help the population cope with the high demands of the modern day life. Such facilities could have averted tragedies like this. The person in the video has attributed his death to threats received from his daughter in law and her mother.

A side of the the story which more often is brushed aside. Yes it is true women face a lot of challenges in a patriarchal society like ours, it is also true the issues are being discussed and addressed by progressive laws. However men, the threats and the harassment they face has more often not been considered worthy to be addressed, discussed and legislated on.

TLI hopes this shocking video could kick start a discussion, process and perhaps establishing a committee to look into the reasons for suicides and the methods to cope with it. We also request the government to increase our health expenditure with individual attention given to suicide prevention. Lastly we request gender parity in all aspects of life including taking up issues like suicides and harassment.
