Treating cancer and heart disease is about to get a lot cheaper in India.

A new program, “AMRIT,” will drastically reduce the cost of treatment.

“We have identified 202 drugs of cancer and cardiovascular diseases where the price is going to be reduced on an average by 60 to 90 percent. In the same way, 148 cardiac implants will be reduced by 50 to 60 percent.” – J.P. Naddah, India’s Minister of Health

This puts life-saving treatment within reach for many more Indians.

Cancer deaths are up 60% in India from 1990 and cardiovascular disease is a growing problem across the country.

The cancer drug market is currently unregulated in India and AMRIT, now in its pilot stage, aims to fix that because health care should be a universal right.
