During flood relief operations in Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah, an Indian National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel gently cradled a rescued infant, capturing a moving moment of humanity and compassion.

The floods have claimed over 400 lives, displaced thousands, and damaged nearly 30,000 homes. India has sent more than 27 tonnes of relief materials by air and sea, and rescue teams equipped with specialised gear continue to assist affected communities. Officials have praised the dedication and spirit of the rescue teams amid the crisis.

“Hope held in brave hands,” is what Indian government wrote on its social media platform X while sharing this emotional moment of a woman personnel of National Disaster Response Force. In the now viral video, the NDRF personnel is seen sharing an emotional and heartfelt moment with a rescued baby.

The uniformed woman, standing in knee deep water, gently cradles a rescued baby, smiling and holding the infant like her own.

This sweet gesture has won millions of hearts online, praising the NDRF and India’s efforts in its neighbourhood first policy amid devastating Sri Lanka floods. The Indian government called this a “a moment that captures pure humanity, courage, and compassion amid crisis.”

Cyclone Ditwah Hits Sri Lanka

Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread devastation last week, triggering severe floods and landslides across Sri Lanka. The disaster has led to over 450 fatalities, with hundreds more missing and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.

Emergency response efforts are ongoing as affected people face immense challenges due to loss of shelter, food, and basic amenities. The situation remains critical with continued rescue and rehabilitation operations underway.

India’s Operation Sagar Bandhu

India has responded swiftly, delivering over 27 tonnes of relief supplies including food, blankets, hygiene kits, tents, and ready-to-eat meals. The NDRF personnel are deployed on the ground equipped with inflatable boats, hydraulic cutting and breaching tools, advanced communication gear, and medical first-aid kits.

A video showing an NDRF rescuer gently cradling an infant in knee-deep floodwaters has gone viral, symbolising the courage and compassion of the teams. Officials like DIG (Operations) Mohsen Shahedi highlight the readiness and specialised training of the NDRF in providing effective humanitarian assistance.
