Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay secured a decisive victory in the vote of confidence held in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on May 13, with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government comfortably crossing the majority mark.
The motion received 144 votes in favour, while 22 MLAs opposed it and five abstained. The government drew support from the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League, along with support from expelled and rebel legislators, including former S Kamaraj of the Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazhagam.
Meanwhile, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) abstained from voting and staged a walkout, while Edappadi K Palaniswami urged AIADMK legislators to strictly adhere to the party whip and oppose the Vijay-led dispensation. The successful floor test marks a major political milestone for Vijay and signals a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
Allies Help Vijay Win Vote
The confidence motion, held amid intense political scrutiny and public attention, turned into a major show of strength for Vijay’s newly formed government. TVK, which emerged as a formidable political force in the recent Assembly elections, fell short of the majority mark on its own and therefore relied on external support from allied and opposition parties. During the Assembly proceedings, Congress extended support through its five MLAs, while CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML backed the government with two MLAs each.
In a significant development, expelled AMMK MLA S Kamaraj also voted in favour of the government, further boosting the coalition’s tally. Reports also suggested that several rebel AIADMK legislators either cross-voted or extended tacit support to the TVK-led alliance despite the official stand of the party leadership.
The final count of 144 votes comfortably surpassed the required majority threshold in the Assembly, underlining Vijay’s ability to build a broad coalition despite being relatively new to electoral politics.
Addressing the House after the trust vote, Vijay thanked alliance partners and supporting legislators, stating that the government would work “for every citizen of Tamil Nadu without discrimination”. He described the coalition as a “people-centric alliance” committed to transparency, welfare and inclusive governance.
Vijay also reiterated his promise to focus on employment, education, healthcare and corruption-free administration, themes that had strongly featured during his election campaign.
Speaker JCD Prabhakar described the outcome as “historic”, noting that Vijay had first won the trust of the people and had now successfully secured the confidence of the Assembly as well. Outside the Assembly premises, TVK supporters celebrated the victory with slogans, music and processions, portraying the trust vote as the beginning of a “new political era” in Tamil Nadu.
DMK Walkout Signals Political Shift
The proceedings also highlighted the changing dynamics within Tamil Nadu politics, particularly among the opposition parties. The DMK chose to abstain from the vote and staged a walkout during the proceedings, arguing that the confidence motion did not adequately reflect the broader electoral mandate of the people. Senior DMK leaders reportedly criticised what they described as “opportunistic alignments” among smaller parties and rebel legislators supporting the TVK government.
The AIADMK, meanwhile, witnessed visible internal strain ahead of the floor test. Party chief and former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had publicly instructed legislators to oppose the Vijay government and reminded them that they were bound by the party whip. However, speculation around dissent within the AIADMK camp intensified after reports emerged that some MLAs were unwilling to align with the party’s aggressive opposition strategy.
Political observers believe the developments signal deeper fractures within the AIADMK and could potentially weaken its standing as the principal opposition force in the state. Analysts have also pointed out that Vijay’s rise has disrupted Tamil Nadu’s traditional bipolar political framework historically dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. His ability to attract support from parties across ideological lines during the floor test may further consolidate his political position in the months ahead.
The confidence vote was conducted after Governor R. N. Ravi asked Vijay to prove his majority on the floor of the House following weeks of alliance negotiations and political uncertainty after the Assembly election results. Constitutional experts noted that the floor test was crucial to ensuring political stability and reaffirming democratic procedures amid rapidly shifting loyalties.
Beyond the immediate numbers, the trust vote has sparked wider conversations about celebrity-led politics, coalition governance and the evolving aspirations of Tamil Nadu voters.
