Mid Day meals were first introduced in 1963 in Tamil Nadu by then Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, and the scheme was later made pan-India. Presently it is covered by the National Food Security Act, 2013, and serves 120,000,000 children between classes I to VIII in over 1,265,000 govt schools.
