Varanasi Municipal Corporation has unveiled an AI-powered vehicle designed to detect and curb illegal advertisement hoardings across the city. Equipped with 360-degree cameras, GPS mapping, laser measurement tools, and drone support, the vehicle patrols during peak traffic hours to identify unauthorised hoardings efficiently.

This initiative, launched by Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari, aims to reduce visual pollution, ensure public safety, and support faster enforcement by municipal authorities. The innovative measure has been welcomed by officials and citizens as a significant step toward a cleaner, more organised urban environment in this historic city.

Advanced AI Technology in Action

The AI vehicle, a white electric model provided by Sky Sign, is loaded with state-of-the-art technology that includes street view GPS, real-time data processing, and app-based automated notice generation for violations. Municipal Commissioner Akshat Verma explained, “This technology allows us to cover larger areas quickly and accurately, making enforcement of municipal regulations more effective.”

Equipped with drone surveillance support, it records details of illegal hoardings for quick action by enforcement teams. The vehicle usually operates during morning and afternoon hours to avoid traffic snarls and gathers critical data to ensure compliance with city regulations. This move offers residents relief from visual clutter and safety hazards caused by unregulated advertisements.

Tackling a Persistent Urban Challenge

Illegal hoardings have long troubled Varanasi, cluttering streets, obstructing views, and sometimes causing accidents. Previous enforcement largely depended on manual inspections which struggled to keep pace with the scale of violations. The AI initiative aligns with the broader Smart City Mission and regional efforts to incorporate digital solutions for urban governance.

It follows other technological advances in the city’s transport and safety infrastructure, such as partnerships with global firms to integrate AI in traffic management. Officials believe this step will enhance transparency and accountability, making enforcement proactive rather than reactive.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The use of AI technology to regulate public spaces in Varanasi illustrates the potential for innovation to foster cleaner, safer, and more equitable urban living. While technology can greatly improve governance efficiency, it should be implemented with sensitivity to those whose livelihoods depend on street advertising.

The Logical Indian supports solutions that blend technological progress with empathy, encouraging inclusive civic development without marginalisation.
